    Fuel Gauge readings wrong

On my '05 with 105,000 miles, when it was started up this morning the low fuel light was on and the gauge read that the tank was empty. Should be over 3/4! Then it moved up to 1/4 after a few miles then up to 1/2 a few miles later.
Is it safe to say that the sender is going bad, or possibly it has some crud on it? Any recommendations to fix it?

either way the tank has to come down, may as well replace it
