Post No Accessory Function/Key not detected in ignition - 2003 Escalade Base

    Hi,
I recently purchased a 2003 Escalade from an auction. The ignition cylinder had been drilled/popped as I believe the vehicle was stolen and then recovered.
After the purchase, I had the dealership install a new ignition cylinder. They informed me the housing likely was fine and only the cylinder/pins had to be done.

After getting it back, the new keys/fobs are all programmed and it runs like a dream. The only issue I've noticed is that the accessory function does not work (key in the ignition, turned backward). I can turn the key to the accessory position but nothing happens, no lights, no radio, nothing!

I brought the truck back in assuming they installed the wrong cylinder, at which point they informed me the cylinder has nothing to do with that, since it's not a wiring issue and strictly mechanical. I had them do some additional diagnostics on it to determine the root cause of the electrical issue. The dealership determined the key was not being detected as in the ignition at all by the truck, the root cause a malfunctioning SIR coil and it had to be replaced (Part cost $800 + tax before labour, likely half a day of labour).

Did some reading myself about the SIR coil and it seems to be related to the air bags. I was a bit confused as to how they came to this conclusion with anything to do with the key detection, since it didn't seem like a related part. I brought my concerns up and they've refused to do any more investigation until he SIR coil is replaced.

Decided to come here for some help/advice on what to do next!

I was going to take the column apart and have a look in there and see what's going on. I was thinking maybe a wire was cut when the previous person drilled out the ignition cylinder. I'm not 100% familiar with how the ignition system works though and was hoping for some tips!

I do know the cylinder connects to the housing, which has wires for passlock, key position, etc. I assume maybe something with one of these wires is faulty?

    - Is it possible the SIR coil is the actual cause?
    - What should I look for if I open up the column/housing?
    - Any suggestions on where to start testing for things gone wrong?

    Thanks!
    - Rob

I have an '03, had it since new and I have no turn the key backward Acc. position like past GM vehicles. My assumption has always been that it wasn't needed since the electrical power stays on for 5-10 minutes after the key is turned off. When I need to sit for a longer period of time and have power, just turn the key back on for a second and you get another 5-10 minutes. This function goes off as soon as the dorr is opened.

    Thanks for the reply BDuncan,
I mis-spoke when I said backward, it's actually one step between the ignition on phase. Double checked in my manual and it appears to be there as well. I can definitely tell it'a an accessory state that I put the key in, as it's an extra "click" but it doesn't appear to do anything when it's there.

If I go to the run position all the lights come on (including the red battery light on the dashboard) so I know that's the run position and leaving it there will kill the battery. Everything does stay on for 5-10 minutes afterwards as you suggest, until the door is open... but I'm just curious as to why my accessory option doesn't work at all. Seems the key isn't being detected in the ignition.

I've attached the page from my manual that I was looking at.
    Thanks again!

The acc position should be the first click as you turn the key to run(the battery light and radio will come on(the wipers will work also)
