gas smell SOLVED! with other woes!
So i read about others who solved their gas smells by chaning the gas tank vent. that would have been nice. But it didn't work. so i pulled the tank and found that the top of the fuel pump was swollen with rust. you could see where the pressure line was soooo weak from rust that it was seeping gas......while working on that i noticed that the brake lines going to the back of the car were all rusty too. this is an 04 that i always wash after we take it out on salty roads.....even when it's freezing out there i wash underneath it! so i ended up replacing the brake lines too. I used a new type of brake line- it's a copper/nickel alloy. much easier to bend, and supposedly won't corrode. i burried it all in rustproofing when i was done anyways. lots and lots of hours under the car this week. But i did work using a lift and a TV!~

Check to see if GM has a recall for this or a TSB that goes beyond the warranty.
I had a Chevy Trailblazer prior to the Escalade and certain years GM covered beyond the warranty period for just this sort of problem with rust at the fuel pump housing.
Even if you already bought the parts and repaired it yourself, I believe GM reimberses you for the repair cost.
