    Gas gauge has gone whacko

I filled up yesterday...drove home and parked. I went out this AM and started up ready to drive to work. I noticed the fuel gauge was reading way past full and it stayed that way most of the day. Finally on the way home it had moved to the Full mark...but I know I used 1/4 tank.

I notice also that when I turn off the switch the gauge drops to 1/2 tank instead of empty.

What has suddenly happened? Any ideas?

It may be too obvious, but did you tap on the gauges... Sometimes the needle gets stuck and won't read correctly

Sprink the stepper motor may be going bad
My moms 02 does this on the oil pressure gauge
If the tapping on the face don't work try cycling the key a few times

Check on your local craigslist for "GM clutser repair". I know in a couple of different cities that a rtepair man will come to you to do the swap out. for a fair price.

Or its a pretty easy DIY (and cheap) if you can solder.

OK...weirdness continues...now the gauge works normally. Go figure. I read up on the step motor phenomenon..thanks for the info. I guess mine is giving me a heads up that someday sooner or later the gauge cluster will go out.

Thats how they "go". Sometimes they work then poof it goes crazy then returns to normal.

Save yourself the headache and either way you decide to replace them do them all at once. I did the gas gauge first, a month or so later the tach started acting up, I replaced the tach then the speedo started thats when I said heck with it and replaced all the rest.

Ebay is your friend on these parts.

Re: Gas gauge has gone whacko

Just finished the install/upgrade. I had three lights out on the dash that I never noticed. They are a BEAR to get properly soldered on the board. It's a "surface solder", and there's hardly any available area to solder them. I replaced all the steppers too. It's best to take the thing back to the truck and plug it in, start it, and check all the lights and gauges before you button everything up. I DID put the front plastic on though to avoid screwing up the gauge needles.

Hmm I haven't had any of the dash lights burn out yet.

But good advise as far as plugging the cluster in and checking for burned out bulbs before putting all back together.

The thing is, I had no idea that any were burned out until I plugged it back in without the gauge cover on it. There seems to be enough light bouncing around in there that if you loose one, two, or three (in my case) if they aren't right next to each other it's hardly noticeable.
