    gas cap warning

Fellas, I need a lil advice please. I have an '05 'Lade. Twice now I've gotten the "tighten gas cap" warning in the DIC. When it came on, I checked and found the cap tight and the warning disappeared after several miles. Shortly after, the check engine symbol came on. That lasted several miles and a few startups also but then went out. It hadn't come back on for about a month or so until yesterday. I don't know if the two are related. I would think if they are the warnings would happen simultaneously maybe. The engine symbol is still illuminated but I haven't driven it much (200+ miles) since it came on. Does anyone have experience with this? Is it a simple matter of a new cap? I've been planning to get a locking cap anyway. btw......I have 72k miles on it.

    Thanx guys.

    Re: gas cap warning

The two warnings are related, the check engine is coming on when the code is set. I had the gas cap warning a few years ago and found that the securing strap was pulling the cap open a little now and then. Make sure the cap strap is loose on the cap and put a little grease on the cap rubber washer. On some vehicles, the cap seal vacuum sensor is probably more sensitive so the seal needs to be better to not trigger the warning.

Wow. OK. If that is the case, it will be a welcome relief. What you are saying makes sense too. I'll try that today when I get home from work. I have my CTS with me today. Thanx for your help! I'll keep everyone informed. This web site is an excellent resource.

    Re: gas cap warning

This happened to me as well about 8 months ago. Went to AutoZone. They cross referenced the OEM for after market and sold me a new cap meant for an 05 ESV.
A few day later, the warning "tighten fuel cap" came on again. Rather than running around all over town for this item, I decided to try the OEM cap from the dealer. I was told that GM used different types of caps in 05 models and used my VIN # to find the correct cap. The cap is not cheap, think I paid around $50 at the STEALERSHIP!! The directions on the package said when tightening the cap, go past 3 clicks to ensure a good seal.
It's been eight months and am glad to say that the warning hasn't come on.............thank God for a cheap fix.

    Hope this help all.

I have a aftermarket cap I tighten past 5 or 6 clicks to make sure it is sealed.
