Stopped by the Chevy Avalanche forum and read most of all the post for adding Touchscreen head unit. (man that thread goes on forever). I am confused on one thing. If the radio connector doesn't have the VSS wire how is it to be added. Thanks
Also, if any one is intrested in adding XM to a non-existing setup. GM has a complete kit, which includes everthing for a complete install.

Part# 12498768 | I remember I read on the Avalanche forums that the VSS wire is a green one with white stripes connected to the back of the cluster.
But I think if you already have the Premium Bose amp (autopilot) the wire should already be connected to the headunit. Probably one of the 24-pins. |

If you look at the pictures I posted, the Vss wire is the green with white stripe located at row A pin 4. On the radio plug it is located at row E pin 2. You would need to tap a wire ( 18-20 inches long) onto A4 and then get the connector pin ( don't have part number handy, but can look it up if you need it. 10 to a pack for a couple of bucks at gm dealer) crimp other end of wire to it and insert into radio connector E2. Then check your work by "ohming it" to make sure you have made a good connection. Wire was already at E2 in my 2004 ESV |

Glad it worked out for you!!! It always seems to be the little details you overlook when you can't wait to see if it works. Went to Buick dealer I use for my Lesabre. Took less then one minute to reprogram. Service manger would not even charge me since they learned something new. Threw tech $20. I would go back and bitch that this simple reprograming should take no more than a half-hour labor charge. |

Knowing that most of you aren't Caddillac owners here makes me feel a bit better about posting this here... I just hate being such a newb.
What I've got is an '04 Denali. Without ordering any upgrade options, it comes with the Y91, Bose system w/ XM and the 6-disc changer in the lower area of the console/dash. The only two upgrades were the non-touch Nav and the overhead DVD system. I purchased mine _without_ any audio system upgrade options, on purpose, knowing full well that the '05 model would come with a touchscreen or that I could always go aftermarket (and didn't really want the overhead DVD - no kids). But now I'm running into difficulties with the local dealers on what, exactly, I'll need to order and to get it running properly.
To give you all an idea of my technical abilities: I feel right at home under the dash so long as I know what I'm looking at. I've done a HU/Spk upgrade or two and even completely replaced the audio system in a Miata once (not much room, but it's all easily accessible). I put together and tear apart computers for fun in my spare time. I'll handle the physical install myself.
Here's what I _think_ I need to order:
10377531 - Nav HU for '05+ Y91 Trucks
15135178 - GPS antenna (??? GMPartsDirect.com lists it as a "Power Radio Antenna Module")
10390370 - Nav Software DVD.
Would anyone be so kind as to confirm whether or not this is all I'll need? Of course, I'm aware that a trip to the dealer (or someone else) with a Tech 2 tool would probably still be required.
Thanks, guys (and gals?) for all the great info!

Jason helped me out (if you're reading this - thank you again!). For those that don't already know, it's a NAV upgrade kit for Y91 trucks. They have kits for any '03-up GM full-size truck, with or without Y91, as well. $2200 or so is what it's going for after shipping (I chose next day - can't wait!)
Here's the rest of the results from my experience this morning:
1: Local GM dealers - Mpls/St. Paul area - WILL NOT be able to order the TNR head for Y91-equipped trucks. They're only available as a repair/replacement with a returned unit as per their ordering system. D'Oh!
2: Part number 10377531 has been superceded by 15230099, according to a very helpful lady at Spemco (sorry, forgot the name already). However, the other parts I listed before are correct for a Y91 truck. I'll make sure to list off the numbers from the parts I get through JP Customs, though, just to be helpful.
3: Ordering the TNR package through JP Customs does NOT require any reprogramming via the Tech 2 tool, as per Jason. This contradicts other info I've gathered, here and elsewhere. But since Jason reports that they get their units directly from Delphi - not the GM parts system - and probably not pre-programmed with any vehicle ID data, this is entirely plausible. I'll let you know what I find after I do the install.
4: Some GM sales and/or parts counter staff are mis-informed about the availability/compatibility of the TNR with any full-size GM truck prior to '05. I've had one that said, "Can't do it. Period." One said, "It *should* be possible, but it'll be a lot of leg work." Many other reponses were between these two, but nobody could give me any additional help.
With the information I've gathered here, at the Avalanche Forum (linked elsewhere in this thread), and with the various dealers and retailers/resellers, I'm finally confident that the install will be both painless and successful.
Stay tuned - I promise to have pics of this. |

It learns from the BCM of the vehicle it is installed in. |

10390370 - Nav Software DVD. | Exactly what I bought off E-bay for about $1100 as I recall. Put it in my "04 Lade with the y91 radio system. Bought the truck with no Nav from the factory. The upgrade worked perfect and still works perfect. Also did one on my buddies Escalade. Save money and buy it off e-bay. Just do your homework on the the sellers. |

Ummm. Let's just say I don't exactly have a lot of trust in anything coming from eBay. As you stated, the head, antenna, and disc are the most important parts and can be found on eBay in decent quantity.
However, I've also determined that I'll need/get the following with the kit:
1: Help disassembling the dash - I've never pulled a Denali dash panel off, and I'm a bit concerned that I'll damage it. It covers more of the front of the dash than my previous '01 Silverado. The kit has instructions for this.
2: If there are any additional wiring steps (VSS, for instance), I'll need to know what to do there. The kit has instructions for this.
3: If there are any additional parts I'll need for the install, such as any wiring adapters/harnesses/plugs/etc., the kit I purchased will include them.
4: There's always the peace of mind knowing that there's a warranty from the company I purchased from in addition to the remaining factory warranty. Buying from an individual on eBay doesn't offer as much of a guarantee, if any.
5: I won't have to visit the dealer to have the previous VIN cleared. With the luck I've been having with most of the dealers in my area, this would be a problem - even for the one that has confirmed they'll cover the warranty. I know their service guys as I had my '01 Silverado cared for there. They're not exactly the most confidence inspiring guys I've found. That's the dealership that said to me, "Nope - won't work. Period." I trust them with routine maintenance, but they seem to be totally stuck on anything that falls outside of GM's limited service training.
Finally, my previous experience has shown that the least expensive option in the long run may not be the least expensive up-front. In fact, it's usually the case that the least expensive choice up-front has one of the highest TCOs. Even if buying the kit isn't less expensive in the long run, it's got the most valueable thing to offer, in my opinion - my peace of mind.
Whew! That was rather long-winded... I hope that doesn't come across as being negative in any way, either. I've read it twice, but my higher brain functions aren't working too well right now. I work nights, and I really should be asleep as I type this. Feel free to flame me, if you'd like. I probably deserve it, anyway. |
