Are the plastic engine covers needed?

I took the plastic engine covers off of my 03 escalade and because the passenger side one is so annoying, I'd very much like to just leave them all off. Besides, if I break down somewhere, I'm gonna lose 15 minutes just ripping those things off before I can do anything with the engine. Is there any reason those plastic engine covers need to stay on?

    Keep rain out?
    Keep snow/ice out?
    Keep engine warmer in winter?

    Thanks!

How did you remove the side ones? They seem to be on there pretty well. The engine block looks much better without them on there in my opinion and you are correct it'll make a hassle when you break down somewhere.

Believe it or not that cover actually helps keep the engine cooler in the summer. It directs air to circulate around the engine.
