Question 05 Escalade 6.0 manifold bolts broken?

80 K miles. I had a ticking sound, like a lifter?, coming from the front right engine compartment. It turns out that there were 3 exhaust manifold bolts broken off on one side and 1 broken on the other side. The mechanic knew what the problem was before he even heard it or lifted the hood. He says it is a common problem with the 6.0l engine. I have owned many vehicles and have never had a single manifold bolt broken! Does anybody else have this problem? Is there a recall, published or secret, on these things? This shouldn't happen, right?
    Thanks for any ideas.

It's an easy thing to check. Even if you don't hear an exhaust leak, lift the hood and use a flashlight to look at the manifold bolts. They're not just cracked, they're gone! First estimate is $300 - $400. I'll know more in a couple days and will let you know if I hear from Cadillac.

Nrubkcalb, could you direct message me your case number? I would just like to keep up with your case myself. Thank you for your time.

    Jeff,
See, I didn't know Customer Service monitored this site? I contacted Cadillac through the main website a few days ago and haven't received a response or case number, yet. I tried to send a "private message" to you but this system wouldn't let me. Something about spam worries and not enough time in grade.

Exclamation Re: 05 Escalade 6.0 manifold bolts broken?

Okay, here are some results with my "bolts" problem. A total of three were broken, two on one side and one on the other. It looked as if the heads had just popped off the bolts. This shouldn't happen. I figure they were either defective materials or over torqued when applied. It cost me $260 for gaskets, bolts and mostly labor at my local mechanic. Cadillac never responded to my website inquiry so I called and filed a complaint on the phone. (for Jeff Morris, my case # is 71-853860213) They were not helpful! Having an exhaust manifold spontaneously come loose may be a serious safety issue. It presents both a fire and CO hazard. I'm not sure of my next step. If a few of us have this problem perhaps we should contact the NHTSA? They have a website for reporting such problems, http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/. What do the group think?

    Esky,
Yours don't leak, yet! How many others of us, with these engines, are driving around unaware that the manifolds are hanging on by a thread? It only takes a few minutes to file a complaint with the NHTSA. http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/

Just a thought, but would this not fall under the extended emissions warranty?

checked mine today. I have 2 that are broken. one on each side in the very back. GM needs to do something about this problem. Mine is not leaking that I know of yet. But it looks like all the other ones are going to break at any time.

Re: 05 Escalade 6.0 manifold bolts broken?

OK, ksescalade05, cadillactruck05, esky02, and I all have the manifold bolts failure! I'll bet there are any number of other GM 6.0l owners who have the same problem but haven't checked. Seriously, guys, it sounds just like a sticky lifter, or makes no noise at all. Go look at your vehicles! If you know any other GM owners, with the 6.0l, warn them. I did check the Chevy site and readily found several "manifold bolt" problems. Again, I have had no response from Caddy. (This is where Jeff Morris might want to weigh in?) I'll bet GM got a bunch of bolts, probably made in China, that were sub-standard. Which reminds me, if you have your bolts replaced, save them in case the NHTSA needs to check them out. Have your VIN handy and go to http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ and file a complaint. It only takes a few minutes and, collectively, we might get some results. I had a 2000 Suburban, 5.3l, with 160,000 miles. The manifold bolts were just fine. I have never had any vehicle where this has been a problem!
Sorry about the double post, earlier.
    Regards,
    Bill

just checked mines, and i have 4 missing. Hard to say what happened to them because this motor has been replaced before. I'm heading to the junkyard monday and see if i can get some bolts off a tahoe/yukon that'll fit. Mines isn't leaking.........yet.
