Tune-up made my 03 more sluggish??

Just purchased a new/used 2003 Escalade for the wife. Here is something that has me beat, it has 135,000KM on it so I thought I should give it a tune-up, as there is a bit of a vibration at idle. Put all new plugs (AC Delco part# 41-110 left factory gap), new NGK spark plug wires, new fuel filter and a new K&N drop in air filter, full tank of Premium and some Lucas fuel treatment. Now after I am done the truck seems to run smoother but it seems more sluggish than before. I thought it was just me, but now without me saying anything to the wife she said the Escalade feels slower than before i "fixed it". Now I am really stumped... Anyone have a rational excuse for this, or are we BOTH crazy? And to top it all off the vibration is still there at idle, just not as noticeable.

Did you clean the throttle body? How's the trans fluid looking?

Is there a throttle body on a 6.0L? Either way it seemed more responsive BEFORE I did the work to make it better. One thing is that the old spark plugs had a larger gap, and I would assume this is just due to the electode being worn down as they werr original plugs. Maybe the factory set gap is not enough??

Yes you have a throttle body.

Sometimes a dirty one can cause a little sluggishness. If everything is dirty/worn/needing replacement, then they'll kinda be in sync (kinda like all your clothes being dingy) but when you start replacing things, it brings more attention to whatever else needs to be replaced (kinda like wearing a crispy white shirt and some dingy white pants and shoes.)

To find your throttle body, follow the air intake to the engine. Remove the intake connection there, and you'll see the throttle body. There will be the cable connected to it that goes to your gas pedal.

The throttle plate should be shiny. If it isn't, then it should be cleaned. You can get some throttle body cleaner for like 3 bucks at the auto store, and cleaning it takes like 5 mins. That might help.

This may be a shot in the dark, but have you disconnected the battery yet? I know on my impala I would always disconnect the battery to allow the ECM to reset when I changed plugs and such. Usually 1 hour did it for me, should let the ECM relearn the engine parameters.

You said that you left the factory gap on the plugs. They can change while in the boxes, from banging around in shipping. Make sure that you check all the gaps to insure the proper one was maintained.

A new spark plug has been released for use in the above vehicles. The new spark plug has an Iridium tip instead of the current Platinum tip. Due to the different tip design, the gap of the spark plug has also changed. The new spark plug, P/N 12571164 with AC Delco P/N 41-985, is gapped to 1.01mm (0.040 inches) when the spark plug is made. The spark plug gap is set during manufacturing and should not be changed or damage to the spark plug may result. Any new spark plug found to not be properly gapped should not be used.

I have found online that Ac Delco #41-985 has been replaced to #41-110. Although I have not confirmed this with GM.

The auto parts store where you bought the plugs will let you know the proper gap.

Yes the problem seemed to correct itself. the rougher idle has also slightly returned, but the power is back. I did so many things, I am not sure how I fixed it.

Re: Tune-up made my 03 more sluggish??

My rule of thumb on spark plugs is if you have to gap em you got the wrong ones! You should be running either AC-Delco Platinum, Iridium Plugs only!

Also I would suggest pulling off that MAF and getting a can of CRC MAF Cleaner and cleaning that bad boy, Also clean the throttle body!

One last thing I would suggest is Sea-Foaming it! I Sea-Foamed my 2005 EXT and what a huge difference! Im telling you the truck was smoking like a chimney!! There was so much carbon build it was rediculous. Doing this procedure you'll notice a much smoother idle and power increase!
