Hows it going? I have a 2004 Escalade with the common worn NAV buttons. I just purchased a new set of 14 buttons and they came with a new faceplate. I am looking for instructions on how to disassemble the radio to install the buttons. I already have the unit out of the vehicle and I don't want to screw it up. I have read of people doing the replacement and then afterwords they have problems they didn't have before... hopefully its because they missed something. If its not a hassle can you please tell me how to replace them? Also, if you have any pictures or schematics that would help too.
Thanks !!!

Slowly, carefully, pry the black plastic trim ring up from the metal case until you can slide that portion of the face off. Work your way around the radio. There will be a ribbon going from the radio to the face, pull the ribbon from the radio, not the face.
That's how to get it apart. Then looking at the underneath of the faces, you'll just have to swap everything from one to another, and then put back together... |

It won't be very quick but I have taken those apart before.

Otherwise you risk shorting out the control/display board, the mainboard or both. If you think the buttons are expensive, try replacing the entire radio...
Once the radio is out, pry the six plastic tabs away from the case, one by one. Use your left hand to pull the face away from the radio while prying the tabs up with a small screwdriver with your right hand. You're not trying to bend the tabs back. You're just trying to pry them up enough that you can slide the face over them, away from the case.
Pull the face away from the radio carefully because there is a ribbon cable attached to the back of it. The ribbon cable is attached to the face with a quick-disconnect receptacle. There is a slide-lock connector on it. You just grasp the connector by the ends and pull the slide-lock portion of the connector away from the board. Then the ribbon cable pulls out easily.
Once the face is free of the cable, you will find a handful of screws attaching it to the backside of the face. I believe they are 1/8 inch hex. Remove those, remove the volume knob and the navigation joystick cap and the board should just lift free of the face. Then there is a plastic retainer that holds the buttons in that should just snap out.
Replace the buttons and repeat the whole process in reverse... |
