Strange Noise Up Front

Remove this ad
my 04 awd is making a strange noise. its not really a diff whining noise, its more like a, errrrrr sound, mainly near the end of first or second as the rpms get higher before it shifts into the next gear. it only does it every once in a while, mainly while driving in city traffic at a low accelerating. if i drive aggresive or even normal, it doesnt do it. it almost sounds like a exhaust noise or something? any ideas?

Re: Strange Noise Up Front

Does it sound like something is vibrating, like a metallic tinny vibration noise? My 04' is doing that as well, I am getting ready to change out all my fluids and I am going to take a close look at the exhaust and heat shields while i'm under her.

I'm pretty sure I am going to find that one of the rubber "dampeners" from one of the exhaust hangers is damaged or missing or one of the exhaust heat shields is lose and needs to be tightened up. That is just a guess at this point but that is what the noise sounds like to me.

Re: Strange Noise Up Front

now that sounds like that could be it, never thought of that, does indeed sound like a heat shield or something along those lines vibrating. ill have to get under there and check for looseness.

Re: Strange Noise Up Front

Just curious if you ever figured out what your strange noise was? Mine was the passenger side exhaust manifold heat shield. Somehow the PO managed to dent in the heat shield at the very front and it was actually lightly resting against the manifold , I used a set of vice grips and was able to bend it back out so well ya almost can't tell it was ever dented in and poof no more metalic vibration noises, she is as quiet and smooth as she should have been from the start!
