Engine Stalls when idling in Hot weather

Remove this ad
I am having occasional problems in hot weather(100+) if I spend time idling in traffic. The engine stalls. It will restart but stall after a few seconds again. It also displays a "Service Stability" error upon stalling. I already replaced the fuel pump. If the vehicle is moving at a good speed it doesn't stall. It just doesn't like idling too long. The engine temp gauge always remains at 210 degrees. I have 72,000 miles. It is a 2004 Escalade ESV.

I have experienced this with my Fiero. (Not yet in the Escalade). For the Fiero, it was the ignition module overheating.

Basically, look for a vital electronic component under the hood (most likely ignition) that may be failing due to heat soak. Check if there is a damaged heat sink or if the component needs replacing.

Good luck!

Re: Engine Stalls when idling in Hot weather

Something electronic is overheating as mentioned above, especially if you're having Service Stability errors after these episodes. I'm not even sure how those two could be connected, but Stabilitrak DOES have the ability to cut engine power during vehicle instability, so it is conceivable the powertrain and stability systems are connected.

Re: Engine Stalls when idling in Hot weather

Thanks for the input. I took it to the dealer and they don't get any fault codes on their computers and couldn't get it to stall since the weather was a bit cooler today. They don't have any ideas why it stalls.
