    Serpentine Belt Dressing

    Hi Guys
I hope I have not made a mistake.
My 05 Escalade ESV with the 6.0L has 64000 miles
The serpentine belt was making a slight chirping sound when the engine was cold.
So I sprayed some STP Belt Dressing on the underside of the belt surfaces (the grooved side)
At first, the sound was great. very quiet. I was happy.
After 2 minutes, a loud, much worse chirping started, and now it will not stop. It increases in frequency as the engine RPM increase.
Even after the engine is warm it will not stop.
It is definitely coming from the belt or pulleys.
    What have I done?
I now want to get the belt(s) changed, but have I damaged anything?
Also, I see there are 2 belts on my engine.
What is the smaller belt for and should I replace both at the same time?

Is it hard to replace the belts? Can some explain the steps involved?

    Re: Serpentine Belt Dressing

A chirping that won't stop sounds like a bearing going, rather then a belt slipping. IMO changing those belts is a 2 man job. I don't know if I've ever seen a step-by-step how to posted here.
The above post is my 2 cents....nothing more.

    Re: Serpentine Belt Dressing

Those belts are easy to change, the lower, smaller one is the a/c compressor drive belt.
If you have any miles on it, replace them both.
The belt likely got something on it that caused it to squeak, and now with belt dressing it will never stop.
    Get new ones.

    OK Thanks
I will have both of them changed ASAP.
It is very annoying to listen to.

I read on another forum that belt dressing should not be used on serpentine belts. It will breakdown the compounds in the belt.
Great. I should have done my research first.
    I am such an idiot.

Make sure that you verify your belt through your vin to see what size you need. Either a 145 amp or a 105 amp alternator changes the size of the belt. Check gmpartsdirect for the best pricing around. Don't but from the dealership or have them install it.

    Re: Serpentine Belt Dressing

    OK
    Got both belts replaced today.
    Main Belt Part #12576451 $74.64
    A/C Belt Part #12576447 $30.66
    Labor $45.00

Old belts were very shinny on top and grooves were all cracked.
He also checked the tensioner and idler pulleys and checked the pulley alignment to be sure it was just the belts causing the chirping noise.

The Ladie is quiet as can be now with no chirping.
My 05 Lade was way overdue for new belts. If you have over 50K miles on your belts, get them changed soon.
And don't use any belt dressing on your belts!!
Thanks for a great community of Escalade owners.

    Re: Serpentine Belt Dressing

Thanks for the update. I decided to change my belts too. 80,000 miles is a good time. I paid about 75.00 bucks from gmpartsdirect.com and got the compressor and surpentine belt. Easy change makes a happy Truck

    Re: Serpentine Belt Dressing

They are supposed to be good for longer than that, but sometimes they get something on them or they get slick like that and just make noise.
Glad to hear you got it fixed.
    Just no more belt dressing

loosen the tensioner .... swap the new belt on .... tighten the tensioner .... VERY easy .... with one person, it should only take 10-15 mins total for both belts.

    Re: Serpentine Belt Dressing

The tensioners are springloaded, the main drive belt uses a 15mm bolt in the center of the tensioner pulley, press it inboard and down to release the tension, make careful note of how the belt is routed BEFORE you remove it.

The A/C belt requires the main belt to be removed, I forget what it uses to unload the tensioner but it is the same idea.

Fairly simple, but as I said, be careful of the routing, draw yourself a little sketch before you remove them.
