Is it safe to use 87 octane

I have been reading on this, I have a 2002 ext 6.0l. It says that Premmuim is recomended but not required. The compression has been reduced compared to older northstar motors but I just would like to confirm this with other people on this site if it is OK.

You can run it, the knock sensors will retard the timing enough to prevent knocking, you will lose performance and probably fuel mileage though.

Sean, what you are doing is making 90 octane by mixing, it will not hurt anything except performance and fuel mileage, the lower octane will mean that the computer will retard your timing enough to not allow your truck to knock. I run at least 93 octane because I had my computer reprogrammed for max performance.

Hmm...I thought they we're supposed to run on 87.

I have a 04 ESV. I'll run it to just about empty and fill with premium (which is 92 in my area) and report back on milage and if I see a performance difference.

    I've been averaging 13.3 mpg

Hcvone...now tell me how you went about this...was this an aftermarket chip or did you or your dealer perform this nifty little trick...if it enhanced gas mileage that has to be an added bonus...please let me know

    Thanks,
    Sean

I've run regular and supreme and noticed no difference in performance or economy?

I also would like to know more about your reprogramming "hcvone".

Re: Is it safe to use 87 octane

I first used the Preditor programmer, and was happy with the results, then a guy that does LS1 Edit tuning who has an 03' Escalade put in a program that he has in his truck in my Escalade, it was like going from stock to the Preditor in the difference the truck performed. I am still trying to get back to the dyno to see how much hp was picked up from the mods.

I did not see any fuel mileage gains, but there were performance gains.
