I have a 2004 escalade and was wondering if anyone can tell me what the black thing on the left hand side of the overhead console that the reading lights, sunroof and universal remote reside in

It looks like a mic or maybe a speaker

Is it for the onstar system

Yes, that is the microphone for communication with Onstar and for making phonecalls through Onstar.

can this microphone be change for a better one. with a high quality microphone or just change the location to the speaker above the driver head the one on the roof well i think it is a speaker ?

The one over the drivers head is not a speaker. Its a temperature sensor.
