They also swapped my unit in 24 hours no problems under warranty.

Re: 2004 Escalade NAV buttons worn out - Warranty?

So this thread has a happy ending. My local dealer agreed to replace my nav system under warranty and in kind I agreed to purchase extended warranty off of their dealership, although GM Canada makes you pay to have the display cluster changed to Metric dominant before they will sell you the extended warranty. But at any rate, spending 700 for the changeover is still cheaper than 2500 for a new NAV unit through a dealer or 1200 or so off of ebay, plus I (hopefully) am building a good relationship with the service manager. A much preferred solution. Glad I found one who saw the "Big Picture".

That's great. Nice compromise.

I purchased my ESV last May. Everything was in good condition except the Nav system. I used a black Sharpie to touch up the pealing. 2 to 3 coats works better. I'm still trying to get used to using the Nav system. Every address I input doesn't register.

The dealer I bought my ESV from (not a Caddy dealer) doesn't know how it works. The Caddy dealer next to them can't remember how to use it (probably pissed that I bought the ESV from their neighbor). The tutorial dvd is confusing and doesn't explain why the addresses I input is not recognized.

Re: 2004 Escalade NAV buttons worn out - Warranty?

If you guys are under warranty and within driving distance, we usually replace the buttons. They can be found but not through GM, we have to call our service center with the radio part number and they ship us the replacement buttons.
It is faster, easier, and more reliable to replace the buttons.
If the radio is replaced it is not a new one, it is a refurbished unit... which is fine except that sometimes the refurbished ones look pretty, but don't work right.
If your unit is working it is better to just replace the buttons.

Most dealers will replace the radio itself but that is quite pricey and drives up warranty costs, that is why some dealers won't do it. They don't want the wrath of GM on their backs.

If you are out of warranty the buttons can be had for I believe $16 a piece. A little pricey but cheaper than a new unit. We can help you get them if you want them. Just PM Luke with the part number off the radio.

There are no bulletins and you'll never get a dealer to "admit" that it is a problem. Some do it, some don't.
We just do what we can to keep our customer happy and our area manger is more than happy to let us replace the buttons for a lot cheaper than replacing the whole unit.

Re: 2004 Escalade NAV buttons worn out - Warranty?

I am new to this forum and don't know much about escalade yet.
Where can I find the radio part number? Also who do I contact to get the new buttons?
I purchased 05 Escalade few weeks ago and would like to change my worn out buttons.

Thanks in advance

Re: 2004 Escalade NAV buttons worn out - Warranty?

To get the part number off the radio you basically have to remove the radio and read the label on the top or side of the radio. It will have an 8 digit GM part number on it.
PM Luke, his member name is Lindsay Cadillac Parts. For you guys who can't PM I'll get you his phone number or look in the Lindsay Cadillac section of the forum and see if he has it posted. Call him and let him know you are a forum member. He'll need to know exactly what buttons you need.

You have to purchase them through a GM dealer, we can call the service center and get them ordered then ship them to you. Replacing them is easy if you can use tools and have a semi gentle touch and a bit of patience.
If you are out of warranty this is the best way to go.

If you need help getting the radio out there might be some info in the FAQ, if you can't find anything let me know and I'll post some tips.

Thanks that is great info to know if they ever peel in the future. Come to think of it, all of my Nav system presets were still there so perhaps they just replaced the buttons?????? Or is there some way to transfer the presets (Satellite fav buttons etc) from one NAV system to another?

At any rate, regardless of what they did, it looks a TON better and much more in line with the shape of the rest of the vehicle.

Thanks for your input.

Are the refurb units any better about the peeling?

Re: 2004 Escalade NAV buttons worn out - Warranty?

The replacement buttons are the same as the ones you take out, they are not improved, just new.

I have found if you take a few precautions that the buttons will last for a nice long time.
The two big issues I have noticed are fingernails and finish enhancers. (like armor all)
I'd recommend being careful with cleaners also.

Re: 2004 Escalade NAV buttons worn out - Warranty?

LOL -- I'll make sure when I'm in for my next manicure that they trim them close :-)

My original buttons, some were almost gone, and the EXT only had 14K miles on it and was 4 yrs old...hopefully the replacement unit will fare better. I use the steering wheel controls more than anything, and I don't use the nav that much, so I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Re: 2004 Escalade NAV buttons worn out - Warranty?

It sounds funny but some of the worst ones I have seen are on some women's vehicles where they have the long nails and they use them to push the buttons.
I have seen some volume knobs on the old UB0/UB1 radios that were just white!

Re: 2004 Escalade NAV buttons worn out - Warranty?

Ewill3rd,

Since I don't want to take the radio out with screw and mess it up, Do you think its possible for me to get my Cadillac dealer to do this? I bought my car from dealer and I asked if they can replace the entire navigation since buttons are faded but they say it is not covered by warrenty. (Retarded since it says its under bumper to bumper)

Let me know

- Thanks

Re: 2004 Escalade NAV buttons worn out - Warranty?

You can try to persuade them to do it, but the decision is ultimately theirs.
Tell them you have heard that other dealers have found that the buttons are available from their "delco service centers" and all you have to do is call and ask them. They will need the 8 digit part number off the radio.
They may not want to go to the trouble.
The Escalade radios are not really that hard to do, you just have to be careful and take your time.

Re: 2004 Escalade NAV buttons worn out - Warranty?

I e-mailed my dealer and he e-mailed me with below

------------
The Escalade is out of factory warranty since it had more than 50,000 miles at the time of purchase. I have asked our service manager, Cadillac Certified technicians, and parts department about just replacing the buttons, and they have no knowledge of replacing just the buttons. There are a couple other options you have that we can discuss with you when you come in for your oil change.
------------

What do you think is my best bet? Should I remove the radio myself and order it through Lindsay? How hard is it to replace the buttons?

Thanks
