Guide to installing a rear view camera?

Remove this ad
Hello, I am new here and I have a 2006 ESV. I searched the forum but cannot find a detailed step by step guide to installing a rear view camera. I have stock Nav and I know and I need a box and camera. Is there instruction how to do this? Also, any recommendation on the input box and camera? TIA.

Re: Guide to installing a rear view camera?

You will need a nav tv unit like this...

Call them and ask them you need the unit for a 2006 Escalade! Im sure they have it! I bought mine from them, and it comes with step by step instructions how to install!

And buy this Chrome license plate camera! This is the exact same camera I use and its VERY clear!!! No fogging up issues, etc!! The colors are perfect too!! Plus, you dont have to drill a hole into a bumper and install a camera!

I did this to my '04 EXT and it's one of the best investment for my truck. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Re: Guide to installing a rear view camera?

Thanks for the info. How easy is the installation? Do you have to pull a lot of wires, and where do you put the box? I am a bit anxious as I am not sure if I can pull this off. The total of $350 is very attractive as the custom shop wanted $850 for similar setup.

Re: Guide to installing a rear view camera?

The installation was VERY easy! It depends how knowlegable you are with installing stereos/electronics, etc... I've done it before so I kinda knew what I was doing..

Since you have an ESV, mount the license plate camera to the back bumper.. Then route the wires so its not showing to the rear door and into the truck, and tuck the wires to the side of the truck under the plastic, all the way to the front of the truck. Kinda hard to explain. I ran the whole thing on the passenger side from the rear to up front. You can pop off plastic door sills and tuck it underneath that and under the carpet..
Then go up from under the dash to the navigation unit.

For the nav tv unit box, I tucked it all the way behind the nav unit. There is a cubby hole back there that you can push the box all the way back.

Re: Guide to installing a rear view camera?

(IF you decided to go this route)

Here are example pics i just did real quick using paint. I hope this helps.

The YELLOW is the license plate frame.

The LIGHT BLUE are the wires.

Mount the license plate frame.

Let the wire run underneath the bumper and up to the black rubber seal..

You can peel that rubber seal off a little and tuck it underneath the seal. Then put the seal back on. It wont hurt the wires.

Run the wire underneath that plastic and into the truck.

Now using a Flathead Screwdriver, you can tuck the wires into the plastic side panels to hide it away. Keep doing that until you lead the wires all the way up into the front of the truck like these pics.

Here you can pop off those plastic door sills and tuck the wires underneath.

Same for the front. Pop off those door sill and wire it all the way up front and underneath the dash.

Once the wires are all tucked in and hidden, you can now pop off the dash bezel.

Uninstall the nav unit. Once the nav unit is out. You can look inside and look right & down... You might be able to see that you can access by the glove compartment area...

At this point, I use a coat hanger (bend it out straight like a fishing pole)....

From the dash nav hole, push that coat hanger all the way to under the glove compartment. It will make its way down there, trust me.

Once that works, tape the wires to the tip of the coat hanger and pull it back out!! The wires will then make its way UP to behind the nav unit!!

After thats done, any access wires hanging underneath the glove, etc should be tied down by using Zip Ties. Make it clean as possible. Dont let wires hanging everywhere!

This is a crappy write up, but i'm just trying to help.
