You should NOT change to synthetic oil until 6,000 miles. Up until that point, the engine is still being broken in, and the extra slickness of the synthetic can cause it not to break in properly, and not to catch the small debris that is shaved off. Change your oil at 1,000 miles with regular oil, and again at 3000 miles...then at 6,000 change to synthetic.

I would suggest just taking it easy for the first 1,000 miles. Keep the rpm's under 2,800 and go easy on the brakes.

    Joshuap,

Where did you get this break in timeof 6000 as the dealer says 500 miles, then change to M1??? Isn't that the old school method? Just wondering...

I have spoken to many mechanics, which are very well versed in synthetics, since many diesel trucks now offer extended warranties for those customers who use synthetics. One can surely do an oil change at 500 miles instead of 1000, if he/she desires, but one should still use regular motor oil. Regular motor oil isn't as slick, and hold debris slightly better due to its thickness. During this period, it is not rare for metal shavings and such to enter into the oil.

That's what I've read, too. You want at least 5000 miles on it. Something to do with rings seating properly, I don't remember exactly.

i don't know how much it pertains to the new trucks, but it definitely makes sense if you think about it.
