This is the statement with which I'm taking issue. Nothing GM said in its internal memo supports your interpretation of why GM is letting some dealers acquire the Saks Fifth Avenue edition. Show me a memo from Saks saying, "we failed to move all 100 though the program, so GM should give the rest to dealers" and I'll accept your assertions.

Re: Any juicy details on the Saks version?

We are proud to announce the Saks Fifth Avenue Special Edition ELR will be offered through this year’s Saks Fifth Avenue Holiday Catalog. This package, limited to only 100 units, will include a 2014 Cadillac ELR with a White Diamond exterior color exclusive to this Saks Fifth Avenue package. Cadillac enthusiasts and premier shoppers alike will have an opportunity to reserve a Saks Fifth Avenue Special Edition ELR beginning on Wednesday, October 30th by calling 1-855-SAKS-CAD (1-855-7257-223). The phone lines will remain open until Friday, January 10th, or until all 100 units have been sold. Customers will receive a unique PIN code to identify their reservation for a Special Edition ELR.

Cadillac expected the Saks Edition to go as quickly as comparably marked up editions from Neiman Marcus have in recent years. Demand has been low. So low, that dealers are now being able to pull units toward their own allocation. GM has not written anywhere that they failed, but why else - besides low demand - whould they offer up remaining units well before the Jan 10th cutoff? Everyone can agree that with the price premium put on this special edition, it should be treated as something special. If they are sitting around on dealer lots, there will be nothing premium about it.

It's just as likely that dealerships were unhappy with Saks having exclusive access to this special edition and demanded that GM give dealers some of those exclusive units. January 10th is still 30 days away, so it's impossible to prove your guess that Saks reservations have been slow.

Personally, I hope you're right, because it could be good news for those of us considering a lease in 4-8 months since GM will be under heavy pressure to make the car more affordable.

Just a little history lesson for you...

Neiman Marcus Edition Camaro-limited to 100 units-sold out in 3 minutes.
Neiman Marcus Edition Cadillac XLR-limited to 100 units-sold out in 14 minutes
Neiman Marcus Edition McClaren-limited to 12 units-sold out in 2 hours.
Saks Edition ELR-limited to 100 units-still not sold out after almost 6 weeks.

Im not a hater. I am a huge fan of Cadillac and ELR, but my fear is that this is a bad sign, not only for Cadillac, but for anyone who has already agreed to overpay for a White ELR.

Reading that memo makes it crystal clear. Even with the beautiful white diamond color nobody's buying this $90,000 ELR. The rich will have no problem spending $100,000 for a Tesla that truly gives them a real alternative to a gas powered luxo car. The ELR with just 30 mile electric range is out if league for the price point. Even wrapped in Saks 5 th ave attire.

Maybe the new CEO can fix this pricing problem.

Cadillac specs show 37 miles of electric range under average driving conditions. Some drivers will get more, some will get less.

The fact of the matter is this car is overpriced. The price must be changed or the car will be a flop. The ELR can not start at a price over the C7 Corvette. The car should top out at 56K and start at 46K thats a 10K window. And thats before the 7500 credit not after. Its just a fancy Volt not a Tesla S, nor a base C7.

Re: Any juicy details on the Saks version?

Price is almost irrelevant in the case of the ELR (and especially the Saks version); Cadillac has positioned the car (for whatever reason they aren't sharing) in this 'stratosphere', and again for unknown reason, are not going for volume (exclusivity perhaps). While I agree with everyone the car is too too expensive; it is what it is, so if you want an extended range electric, you better head over to your Chevrolet dealer. I do lament that the gorgeous design (of the ELR) will be a rare sight indeed (as the styling, at least to me, is just 'out of the park' beautiful).

p.s. Now I'm going to head over the STS forum (where I belong, barely) . Cadillac is, at an astounding rate, pricing me out of the 'Mark'.

Price is relevant in that when you over price a object it will not sell. What is the point of GM paying for the tools to stamp a new body and not recover and make a profit on it. A person who wants a ELR is not going to shop a Chevy. At this price it would be more prudent for GM to cancel the ELR and place more Volts in the dealerships.

Image, exclusivity, panache, appeal to a certain clientele (exclude other clientele). Read what I said and try to understand what I'm trying to say. The absolute answer has been hidden (by Cadillac) but someone made a rational decision to do this. What I can say is that I'm on your side (as far as I don't know the reason they chose this path) but maybe their rational will be made clear (sometime in the future). The ELR, in it's current form/price, is not going to be a hit, however, it may become an icon (but that is still to be determined, or not).

There's really nothing hidden here at all. GM did there homework rather well and confirmed that the top 1% of income earners are all " gaga" over the Tesla It's the #1 car if choice of the wealthy. Insert GMs formula of " platform sharing" ie- XTS, Escalade and you can see how they came to the logical decision to apply this formula to the Volt/ELR. By comparison to XTS/Impala/Lacross &Escalade/Tahoe the ELR has way more uniqueness as only the power train is shared. Hey, it's a coupe too. Hence, the formula is there and proven HOWEVER the math is just way off. The XTS is only approx $12,000 more then Impala/Lacrosse. Having ELR in the $74k range even targeted at those lucky few 1% of Americans that have $75k stuck between their sofa pillows " ain't stupid". They did not become so wealthy from being foolish. The ELR does not justify the money when for $5 k more the customer can buy a Tesla that will go 255 miles on a single charge not 37 !!! That ladies and gents is the issue.

PS- if ELR did have a range of plus 100 miles per charge I do think Cadillac would have captured the attention if their target audence.

The image of this car is that it is overpriced. It will be a hard sell, if priced right it might be a success. The C7 is car of the year and can be had for less than a base ELR. You could buy a C7 and have image with panache and fuel for 5 years for less than a ELR.
