    Re: ELR price announced

Wow. Just a few hours have passed since my last post. I wasn't kidding when I said Cadillac blew a sale. I test drove the Fiat 500e this afternoon and was more impressed than I thought I'd be. Then, next door, I test drove the Volt -- and was even more impressed. It's not as sexy a car as I would like, but it is a really well designed and substantial vehicle that does everything I want. The deal is done. I am now the owner (well, lessee) of a Volt. I pick it up in a couple of days. Cadillac's loss.

    Re: ELR price announced

No, I drove the 500e, which only comes in one model (and a couple of different trim packages). Not bad, actually. It feels much bigger inside than one would expect, it has lots of pep, and was fun to drive. But it's still a small, dome-shaped car that gets blown around in wind on the freeway, and it isn't as solid a car as the Volt and doesn't handle nearly as well. It also has fewer features. All in all, the Volt is a better car, a better drive, and a better value. It's a sedan, though, so it doesn't have the sportiness or character I wanted. I just hope there is a wider selection of sporty affordable EVs on the market when my lease expires in three years. Maybe the ELR will be trimmed down and priced more reasonably by then.

For what it's worth, the 500e is a compliance car -- and Fiat really didn't want to make it, doesn't want to sell it, and probably won't stand by it. One has to doubt the quality of service and support they will provide. I imagine their short-sighted, whiny, outdated attitude comes from their American owners at Chrysler. I've never thought highly of the people who run the American car companies (and I have never until yesterday owned an American car), so I'm glad to see GM wake up, innovate, and commit to the future.

I just kinda thought of it as a Ping Pong ball and Suburbans are the paddles.
