    This confuses me.

    I thought the performance would be governed by the HP and torque of the electric motor that drives the front wheels, and not so much by the size of the gas engine that drives the generator.

    Until you run out of juice. Power won't be higher at the wheels, but whatever makes most efficient energy generation will be a benefit to overall range...
