Cheapest place to pull a full set of diagnostic codes for a 2010 DTS?

I miss my '97 DeVille d'Elegance with its wonderful ability to display the full set of body and powertrain trouble codes with a mere push of a couple of buttons (I don't miss its head mount bolt problems, but that's another story). I could tell, long before any idiot light glowed red, of just about any current or potential problem without leaving my driveway, ranging from issues with the automatic transmission, to the air conditioner, and even to whether there was a light out in the trunk. My '93 Sedan DeVille, which I still have, also displays just about everything of importance right in the climate control with a push of a couple of buttons, though only those codes available under OBD-I.

My "new" 2010 DTS is a spiffy car, but it lacks this very basic need for amateur mechanics like myself. Yes, I could go to the local auto parts store and buy something for about $100 that would display a number of important codes, but these devices only grab the basic stuff like engine misfires. Problems with the A\C, for example, are not displayed. I know when the car misfires; I don't know when there is a growing problem with the torque converter that will need to be addressed someday.

The last time I was at the Cadillac dealer for some warranty work, I politely asked if they would pull the codes and give me a benchmark for my operation of the car. No big deal, and they were already billing the insurance company a couple grand. Shockingly, the service adviser said that they'd be happy to, but for a fee of $150! Keep in mind that the effort involved in such a thing consists of no more than plugging in a cable, pushing a button, and tearing off some paper output. What a huge money maker this must be! I can now see why Cadillac decided to drop owner access to the OBD-2 system from the DTS...must be a monster profit center for the dealer network.

So where can I find someone with a full featured computer diagnostic system to just give me the occasional readout for a reasonable amount of money? I know these systems aren't cheap so I'm willing to pay something, but above $50 for 5 minutes worth of work seems like gouging. Any ideas?

    Thanks,

    Nick in Palm Spring

Any large parts store will scan your car for free. Then use any of the several online code dictionaries posted in any of these forums. The Seville and Seville forums have links to the OBD-1 (pre-1996) and OBD-II (up to about 2005) diagnostic codes. Your definitions can be found with a quick Google search - "obd2 and can diagnostics for gm cars".

Do these Autozone and other parts stores pull all the codes? I know that they have readers that can display engine codes directly related to emissions (the original primary purpose of the OBD system) but can they grab something non-drivetrain related? For example, would you ever see something obscure like a B1712, Right Mirror Switch Shorted to Ground?

Advanced Auto does it for free as well.

They can pull only the engine and emission codes...
If you want to pull all of the codes, you will need to find a shop that has a TECH 2 and someone that knows how to use it.

If your willing to go to a Chinese scan tool this one seems better then the Craftsman one I have:

    http://www.amazon.com/Launch-3010500...449271&sr=1-10

Cheaper if you buy from China:

I'd imagine taking out the onboard Diagnostic feature has to do with the CANBUS system.
