GM / Cadillac DTS 2006-2011 Front Seats

Why does GM / Cadillac put cloth on the insides of the front leather seats.

Attached is a pictured of the drivers seat of my 2007 DTS? See the cloth on the side of the seat where my thumb is? That's what I'm questioning.

That cloth is the only spot on the seat. Why not just make it leather?

I know GM did this with the leather seats in the Saturn Outlook too.

Please let me know if you know why. Thank you!

Years ago it used to be the opposite, cloth seats had vinyl on the sides.

I'm thinking it was changed to cloth on the side wear it is against the console to reduce noise. Vinyl or leather rubbing against the console may have made noise?

My guess would be to keep it from cracking after a period of time.
That area of the seat flexes a lot every time you get in or out...

HatfordGuy wins- it was done to eliminate squeaking against the center armrest, a very common complaint over the years.

Get in a 2004 Deville sometime and scoot the seat back. Squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek. Very annoying.

Had my '03 DTS at the dealer recently. Got a 2011 DTS as a rental. Looked for the gas cap release. Since I couldn't find the release I tried the old fashionerd way. YEP its your finger on the gas lid.

Seems like they cheapened the car all over. I was happy to get my car back the next day.

All cars with leather seat options use leather only where the seat or arm rest, etc. will contact your body. Otherwise, they use cloth or something else that sometimes resembles leather. Why? I always assumed that it is a cost savings. There might be other reasons, but cost savings is probably the primary one.

For quite some time now gas filler tubes have had baffles in them to prevent using a syphon hose. So there hasn't been a need for a locking gas door for many years. No need for a remote release either. A remote release can fail too, making it very annoying to open the fuel door! So that is why Cadillac (and 99% of other car lines) eliminated the locking or remote fuel door.

When a crook wants to get your gas he just puts a large tray/bucket under the tank and they punch a hole in it. No syphoning required and it drains very fast. No mouthful of gas either.
A few years ago when the price of gas spiked, there was a rash of gas thefts in my area that way. That is a real pain as you need to buy a new gas tank.

Yay to the fuel door lock extinction, as well as the auto hydraulic parking brake release -- AND the auto truck pull down. ALL are apt to fail at the most inconvenient moment...

Ok but I don't buy this "squeaking business" for a NY minute. Funny how I don't get any squeaks in my leather. Now that I think of it I also remember the wood missing from the bottom of the steering wheel on the 2011. I suppose GM is into saving trees these days also...

Also saving on light bulbs,,,no trunk light and no under hood light. No plush door panels, just cheap plastic, no telescoping seat belt restrainer,,guess they saved a bundle on that item alone. It is what it is!,,,

Also, only one door key access hole - on the drivers door. Tremendous savings there.
