Didn't mean to be offensive but trust me, if you ever heard this sound (especially while stopped at a stop light) you would wouldn't have any thoughts about anything scraping the ground.
The 5 rapid knocks sound exactly like a drunk came up alonside your rear fender and thumped you fender very rapidly 5 times.
I was just up in northern MI (live in Florida) and hadn't heard the noise for a while. When it thumped you look around to see who is there before you catch yourself.

Don't worry about offending me. We all like to have some fun here. This forum and the Vette forum are neat. On the other hand, the BMW forum members have no sense of humor.
There is a fix for the KNOCKING sound. Cadillac has a TSB out on this. They replaced my EVAP Canister Part Number 15941577 under warranty. Too early to tell if the replacement corrected the problem - will have to wait till the weather cools off to test.
After reading the other posts on this condition I had pretty much resolved my self to accept it as it was so common and there did not appear to be a fix. I had my car (2006 DTS Performance) in for an oil change and while waiting I mentioned to the service writer of the KNOCKING and he knew immediately what the problem was and he told me there was a TSB.
OH well – so much for the fix. Had a couple of cooler day (70s) and the knocking noise is still there. Back to the drawing board.
I know I have seen something on the following somewhere in this forum but I can't find it. I probably am too impatient to wait for a search on this site.Twice when I have stopped at an intersection about 1 mile from my house I have heard a knocking sound that sounds like someone is in the trunk. It happens 5 or 6 times then disappears.Again, I know I have seen this on the forum but can't find it. I believe it was something to do with the fuel system. I would appreciate someone refreshing my memory on this if possible.
I have had the exact same experience three times. The knock is so distinctive and clear that my wife insisted we stop the car and open the trunk because she was concerned that someone was in it and trying to get out. Of course, the trunk was empty. It has happened each time as we stopped at a light near our home as we were just leaving to go somewhere. When I called the Caddie dealer the rep said to bring it in but warned me that if they could not replicate the knock they could not fix it. So, I have not gone in because it has only happened three times in the course of a year.
Bad news DTS lovers, just got a 2008 DTS loaner - picked it up early this am when it was pretty chilly....Knock knock.....no punch line though. Seems the problem has still not been corrected for 08. Since I only have DTSs as loaners, it is actually kind of amusing to wait and see if it is going to knock or not. If I owned one, it would not be amusing.
and in a new twist on this same knocking sound that I have heard many times in my 06 DTS (but only in cool weather), when I drop one of my kids off at school I have to wait for about ten minutes in the parking lot before I can drop off the other. So we are sitting in the car, with it turned off for ten minutes or so. Shortly after I turn the car off, I get a simliar but different, faster, almost like a drum roll of three to four thumps from what sounds like the same source. Odd.
I too remember a post identifying the source of the noise. Hey, why not black out the windows, and take people for a ride on Haloween. Charge $2.00 each. They will think it is a ghost. When you got lemons, make $$$.
Strange circumstance yesterday. I heard the knocks while filling the gas tank yesterday morning. Car was turned off and I had the pump handle set to full opening as was just standing around waiting for the pump to cut off and as I stepped around the trunk, I heard that familiar noise.
I checked into this knocking problem, Buick has experienced it also, has a tech bulletin on it, stating that it is the Anti-Lock
braking system doing a self check. Maybe. I also have the knocking, not very often, but shook my up the first time it happened.
