New Wheels for my 2008 DTS

Remove this ad
Yesterday I picked up four new wheels for my 2008 Lux III.

I was never a complete fan of the wheels that came from the factory, and when I saw a small picture of these RPO QZ6 wheels I became curious.

These are my original RPO N80 wheels:

Here are the new RPO QZ6 ones:

When I first tracked down their part number this summer I learned that there were only ten wheels available in GM's world-wide parts network, and that all ten were in Lansing Michigan. Over time this number dropped first to six and then to four. With only four left I had no choice but to order them.

According to my parts guy, any others will have to come from the OEM or - in GM parlance - supplied directly from source. Now this is where things get a little funny... Believe it or not, but the wheels are marked as Made in India. I find this quite odd, but perhaps since they were a very limited production of perhaps only a few thousand units, no domestic wheel manufacturer was willing to take on the job.

This wheel design has only been available for order since February 25, 2008, on a 2008 or 2009 DTS, Luxury III with the Platinum Package, so I would be surprised if 500 such cars have ever been built. As well, given that they came from India, I wonder if GM will simply delete the wheel from vehicle line production as the supply is exhausted and replace it with another design.

On a personal note I take pleasure in being just a little different than the next person - and having this rare set of wheels is one way that I can do that. As my colour, Cognac Frost, stopped production the week of February 4, 2008, my DTS will be the only one in the world with these wheels.

Anyways I'll get them mounted sometime in May or June after the snow is gone and will post new pictures at that time.

Very Nice Wheels. And a big jump from what you had....... I thought all 2008 Lux III came with chrome wheels. Not that India Chrome wheel, but chrome wheels nonetheless. Your OEM wheels do not look like chrome to me.

Re: New Wheels for my 2008 DTS

Tomko,

Very nice wheels.
I really like how each spoke has that indentation running the length of it.

A different question for you...
Do you, by chance, have the part number for the splash guards?
I really want some, but, my dealer says he can't get them. I think he just don't want to go to the trouble.

Thanks,
Texas Jim

Jim - I ordered mud guards from this dealer < http://www.newgmpartsusa.com/ > The part numbers are: 17800972 (front) 17800973 (rear).
They come in a flat black color and you'll need to paint them or have them painted. I found a place through google that provided me all the various primers and paints I needed for about $55.00. I can't find the website just now, but the name is Automotive Touchup. If that doesn't get you their correct site, repost here and I'll have found the right place by then.

Jim -- Automotivetouchup.com is the correct site for paint. They'll want paint color code AND VIN for a correct match. GOOD LUCK.

Chris,

Thanks for the information.
I will check it out.
When I get them, I will probably have to have them painted...
I have the White Lightning Pearl Tri Coat. I doubt that I could do a good enough job to satisfy me.
I am too picky.

You're right the original wheel is chrome.

The picture that I took is of an unwashed wheel.

In 2008 winter came here so quickly and early - before Halloween - that I wasn't able to wash and dry my car before I put it in storage. The picture that I took of the N80 wheel was taken in -8 degree weather in my unheated garage.

I'll shoot another once things warm up in May or June and I can get everything washed.

Nice new wheels. Given the rarity, if one ever becomes available again, if I were you, I would grab it if I were you in case you need one.
