Third Brake Light on the Trunk

I've had someone tell me that one of my LED's on the trunk brake light is out. Is there away to turn this on without depressing the brake pedal so that I can see for myself? I know I could always get someone to depress it for me, but was curious if I could do it another way. Are these LED's covered under warranty?

Back up to a storefront with a plate glass window, push the brake pedal, and look in the rear-view mirror.

My wifes 06 had a section of lights go out and developed a few cracks in it. Look closely to see if their are any cracks in the plastic. Replaced under warranty.

Both of my '06 trunk mounted lights were replaced under warranty.
They both had tiny cracks in them.

I learned that the third brake light on the 2004-2007 CTS (and V) was a single-unit gas type and was not composed of individual LEDs. A single high-voltage power supply was used for this light, and it had to be replaced as a unit. I don't know if the DTS light is similar, but it could be. The unit was very expensive and was in short supply at the time. I would expect the only way to replace the unit was under warranty if it was to be done at a reasonable cost.

After checking the factory service manual for my wife's 2008 DTS, it appears that the third brake light (called a CHMSL - center high mounted stop light) is, in fact, an LED unit - not a gas unit and does not use a high-voltage supply. This would imply that the individual lights are LEDs. However, no replacement procedure for individual LEDs is provided. The only replacement procedure described is for the complete assembly.

Stomp on brake quickly and run superfast to back of car. See anything yet??

My favorite method is to put a phone book on top of the brake pedal. It doesn't take much pedal pressure to activate the brake lights.

Just a update:
For anybody that is curious a 06-08 DTS taillight assembly is
$224 big ones.
A 3rd eye brake light (aka HMSL) is $98
plus shipping etc.

These prices were found at GM parts direct.com

Anyhoo ledfix.com (logan) is the guy to see to fix your unit.
Note that if your unit is not listed on that site just shoot them
a e-mail and ask.
