ever put a hitch on your DTS??

Remove this ad
Hi, everyone. I'm new to this forum but not to the world Cadillacs. My parents have owned them for years, since the fifties actually. So, anyway, my dad treats his DTS like a really nice truck. He in fact calls it the "cadi-truck" because they can do anything and go anywhere. He's put hitches on them for years. We got a new DTS and sold the old one that had the hitch so it was time to put it on the new one. Problem, it totally screwed up the whole car and it took the dealership 2 days to get it running again. The dealership said it's not possible to put the wiring in. What??? The car is completely capable of towing a load. How do you get your boat to the lake? Has anyone actually done this? Can you give us some advice as to how to make it work? We are currently using the hitch but we don't have any brake lights which is totally illegal and dangerous. We need it to go on vacation so we can tow our boat with us. It's just too long to do it without brake lights on the trailer. HELP!

Re: ever put a hitch on your DTS??

Welcome to the boards! Sorry you have not heard from anyone yet.

Itd be nice if someone could help this girl out... this seems like easy enough question...

In the meantime, Ill alert one of the techs to see if they can add any useful assistance.

Re: ever put a hitch on your DTS??

The issue here is that the circuitry is more complicated than your average tow rig.
The newer DTS uses an LED tail lamp setup with some tricky circuits to monitor failure of the LEDs and the computer monitors it for all sorts of things like cruise control.
Also the brake light on the new DTS is an output from the BCM which monitors a calibrated pedal position sensor to determine if the brake is applied or not to begin with.

I can do some research tomorrow if someone will bump this topic for me.
I am not sure if there is anyway to tie in to get operational tail lamps on the DTS.
I haven't heard of a tow package for this vehicle... that doesn't mean they don't make one... but I haven't heard of one.

Re: ever put a hitch on your DTS??

You know I was going to say EXACTLY what you mentioned about the LED tail lights on the new DTS, but then I remembered the old DTS (it seems like she mentioned they had one before this one that they WERE able to tow with) had the LED tails too so I just kept quiet. Still I think its a much more sophisticated setup in the 06+ since it also has integrated LED REVERSE lights as well, which seems to be the biggest difference between the two.

Im sure this will provide useful to people in the future if we do get an answer, Ive definitely seen people towing stuff with the older DTS's and Devilles before that.

Smile Re: ever put a hitch on your DTS??

I have a DTS Lux III, had a hitch put on and lights connected. They all work fine. The trailer hitch company, "Big "O's" here in Wisconisn, ordered a specific wiring converter module. On my invoice the description is:
55187 PWRD CONVERTER MODLULE R0220P1. Cost was $37.40. It was installed with a flat 4 wiring harness. The powered converter module is the light duty version for LED lighted vehicles.

If you need more information about this module you could call the company that installed mine. Big O's Trailers, INC (608) 742-2473.

Hope this helps you.
