steering wheel controls

I have a 99 deville and use to have the onstar cell phone in my car, but now it don't work anymore. So I was wondering if its possible to switch out the controls on my steering wheel which is the Phone and Radio controls with the A/C and Radio controls?

Thanks in advance

Re: steering wheel controls

No. I believe this was asked before. I would like to do the same. You could change the switch, but it will still control the phone.

Re: steering wheel controls

I was told by my Cadillac dealer here in Nashville,Tn.That the controls can stay the same but the programming could be changed. They can do it for $80.00,but i'm not sure it's worth that.

I guess that is debatable.

Re: steering wheel controls

OUCH Tommy!!! $320.00???? Damn, that hurt my eyes when I read that.

Guys, you can have control over your temp and fan tomorrow morning before you get up to operating temperature! It's so easy!

My 98 came with the phone too, but for me it was a waste. So, even though the switches say phone recall and send (or whatever), they actually move the fan speed up and down and increase /decrease the temp in step by step increments or if you hold it, it rolls through the degrees to min and max. I did this programming mod in about 1 minute.

The car is simply programmed with or without a phone option when ordered, and the appropriately labeled switch installed on the steering wheel. Those with the phone get the phone switches, those without get the temp / fan switches. The legends on the switches are for the driver, they operate the same way on the inside.

All you need to do is deduct the value of the phone option (16) from the IPC Override IPS03 amount to trick the computer into thinking that the phone option is not installed, therefore defaulting to “no phone” Once you save the setting, the switches start working the temp/fan controls immediately. If you ever want the phone back (why???) you would simply enter the IPC override area again, work your way to IPS03 and add back the 16 to the current value. It goes right back to working the phone again.

You can also do other cool stuff like display coolant temp on the analog dash.

WARNING: I did this on a 98 Deville Concours with the analog cluster. It may work on other years / models with digital or analog dashes, but I cannot confirm. You are entering a key programming area of your computer system and if you enter a wrong value or do not follow the instructions properly, you my do bad things to your car. It goes without saying that if you fry your ride, it’s not my fault, k?

However, to ease you fears it was one of the first things I did when I got the car, and it has been fine since. Like I said, it was easy.

Download the PDF here , pay attention to the IPC override section, take your time, and enjoy!

There is nothing to debate, seeing how I asked the same question on the forum a year or so ago and thats how I found out it CAN be done.

Yes I know all about that, I did all that to my Deville, My Steering wheel controls were just not working at all, they needed to be replaced, so when I took it to the dealor and told him I KNOW it can be done, See, when I told him what i wanted to do at first he wasn't very recpetaive, than once I explained That I knew it could be done and I had already changed the values in the system & that I wanted the proper controlls insatlled he changed his tune, U gotta know how to handle these service guys they want to thing they know it all but deep down they want u to treat then like your bitch, and thats what I did I made him my bitch, complete with ball gag and leash, I'm into that sort of thing.
