92 Deville 4.9 vacuum whistle?

I have a 1992 Deville. It has an intermittent whistle that I think may be some sort of vacuum whistle. It occurs when driving. The whistle will go away when the car is place in neutral and then will not return until mayby days later. It sounds like it is coming from the dash, rather than the engine compartment. Any ideass?

Check the HAVC vacuum lines for a leak. A stethoscope will be a great help.

It would be a lot easier to track this noise if it occurred while the car was parked. The noise will tend to continue if stopped at intersections until it is placed in neutral. If stopped very long, the noise will go away. Just kind of hard to do much checking while the car is moving.

What about raising the RPM in park? Does that cause it to whistle?

No, it only whistles while in drive. The cure is relatively easy with placing it in neutral, but it is annoying when it happens. Sometimes I can drive for several hours without the noise while other times it may occur 2 or 3 times in a short period.

Well, if it only happens while driving, then I think you can rule out the engine. That would narrow it down to trans, axles or hubs.
