the ashtray is an assembly captive by the lower center dash panel. Can't remember for sure when I did it, but the center panel is held in place by four screws/tabs. The entire panel will come loose and you can get to the light. Just out of curiosity, other than putting it back to stock, why do you care about the ashtray light. If you have to remove the driver side knee bolster, do NOT pull down on it. If you do, you'll break off the mounting tabs. Pull it straight back towards the rear of the car. All of those plastic tabs will be very brittle at the age of that car.
The ashtray lamp is held in place by a clip, just give the clip a little squeeze and rock the socket left and right it should pop right out, no need to remove the ashtray.
jmf, thanks for the clarification. I honestly couldn't remember from when I did it; but then, I'm old and, uh, hmmm, I can't remember what else I was going to say.
