Glove box jammed

Remove this ad
I guess this falls under "security systems"

The lock and handle on the glove compartment of my 99 deville is totally jammed...the lock 'turns' with the key, but the handle moves about 1/8th of an inch. I'm not sure if there's something inside caught in the lock or what but..any suggestions on how to get it open besides a crowbar?

EDIT:
The key works with my trunk, so it's not like the key is stripped or bent...

Mine did the exact same thing. Cost me $130 at the stealership for a new one installed.

Re: Glove box jammed

I'm also curious to find out if you were ever able to get into your glove box. Mine is doing the same thing. I locked it one day and a few weeks later I went to get into it and realized that I didn't ever unlock it. Well we'll lets just say it acts like it is still locked. I have tried both truck keys and pulling REALLY hard on the handle, but nothing has gotten this thing to budge. I'd hate to think I'm going to have to pay $130 to get into it. YIKES!!!!!

Re: Glove box jammed

Hey I just dug out my invoice for when I had it replaced and the part was only $40.48. I have no idea how hard it was to replace it. The part only comes in black and the part number is 3541041(thats what the invoice says anyway). Labor was $84.00. So I hope this helps.

Re: Glove box jammed

Hi. I'm new to this forum...but I've got the same issue as described on my 99 Eldorado...the lock turns with the key, but the handle won't budge.I've only had the car about a week, and I'm going nuts to see what (if anything) is in the glove box. I would be very thank full for any help!

Joe

I still haven't bothered to get the glove box fixed. I did have to take the Deville in today and while there asked about getting this fixed and they said it would be about $198 to fix. Part was something like $97 and yes it only comes in black. If I want them to paint it to match the interior the price goes to $225. If it's not too hard to replace I'm thinking about just breaking the old one out and buying some interior paint and just replace it myself.

Re: Glove box jammed

well i know this is a old issue but i had the same problem in '09...i ended up getting a scrible(slim metal needle) sliding it between the top. of the lock and leather you will have to press the on a slide and try to slide it to the right, at the same time pullin on the release latch. it's a plastic peice that hold/toggle for the lock and it broke off i just safetry wire it open where i can't lock it...but thats how you pick that lock

Re: Glove box jammed

Hello all, I have this same problem on my wife's 99 Deville. I took the car to the local locksmith and they charged $10 to remove the latch. Of course, they had to destroy it in the process, but I was able to pick up another one at the DIY yard for $2. You can see on this one where it is molded black and then painted to match the vehicle color. But I do have to also say that I was lucky to find this one, because the DIY only had 3 Devilles and only this one had the glove box intact.

The locksmith also removed the lock for me so I can install it in the new latch after it is painted. However, I was looking to see how he removed the lock because I wanted to do the same for the used latch I just bought. I see the pin in front of the tumblers that depresses, and I imagine that is how the lock comes out, but I tried to gently push the lock out with another screwdriver while I depressed the pin, but no luck. I think the locksmith was able to use the key for my old lock to pull it out while he depressed the pin. I think I'll just take the used latch and the old lock and ask him to switch them. But still these costs are much lower than the dealership.
