| | Cadillac Owners Member | | | | How Much More MPG From Royal Purple 5w30? I have a 1996 Deville with 65,000 Easy miles. My best mileage highway has been 27.6 but agerage on family vacations about 25.5 to 26 with 3 adults from St louis to Florida with clean undee's in the lugage. Now I also Have a 1998 trans Am WS6 6 speed and have spoken with many of my LS1.com buddies that claim an honest 10% increase in fuel milage and about 10RWHP on the dyno or in the case of my Deville would be FWHP on the dyno. Has anyone documented any such increase with Royal Purple Full Synthetic 5W30. It hard to think a 96 Deville getting 30mpg with the air, 3 adults and 250lb of lugage but if it is true not to mention an extra 10 hp to the ground I,m in. 10 hp is hard enough to gain with air management and exhaust or reprograming, It's hard to believe you can get 8 to 10 with less friction but everyone at LS1.com claims it to be true.
What do you think? Anyone used it?
Thanks

Specld, In addition to my '93 Sixty-Special, I own a 2003 Z06 Corvette (LS-6 engine). I haven't personally used Royal Purple in either car, but obviously the Vette requires full synthetic oil. I also haven't converted the Sixty-Special over to full synthetic. Having said that, here's what I can tell you. Bear in mind, this information is second hand, so please view it through that filter. A sponsor of my local Corvette Club owns his own Corvette consignment sales and service facility (and I can personally attest to the fact that he does excellent work whenever anyone goes to him for "upgrades" like Veraram or Black Wing air intakes, Magnasson super-chargers, performance exhausts, performance axles, etc.) He saw a demonstration of Royal Purple at a Corvette festival put on by MidAmerica Corvette in 2005. The demonstration went like this: A bone stock 2004 Z06 Corvette was brought in from an owner who was attending the show. (The owner was apparently chosen by a random lottery the day of the demonstration.) The car had Mobil-1 Synthetic in it, and they dynoed it. They then changed the oil while the audience watched and put in Royal Purple Synthetic, and dynoed it again. What I was told astonished me: the dyno with the Royal Purple translated to a 10RWHP increase in the same Z06. To prove it was the Royal Purple, they again changed it, putting back in Mobil-1 Synthetic, and increase in RWHP disappeared when it was dynoed. As I said, I haven't personally made the switch to Royal Purple, mainly because it isn't to find, and is even more expensive than the Mobil-1 when you do find it. But this Corvette guy I go to swears by the stuff. And, yes, I know him well enough to trust his opinion. I guess the question I have is this- is it worth it to convert my '93 Sixty-Special (118,600 miles) to a full synthetic, or should I just continue to use a high mileage blend of dyno oil? I'm hesitant to make the switch because once you do, you can't go back to using non-synthetic again. -Patrick |

FWIW, I don't believe it, but I am pretty skeptical about those types of claims. I would stay with what the factory recommends, but that's just me. I don't see why you can't try it and why you can't go back to dino. If you get it dyno'd, I be sure to do it from someone completely unbiased. |

If you are just curious you can try it. But maybe you are trading lower friction for engine wear protection?? I don't know but its a though. I agree with ranger and use what the manual says.
Plus in all these cases you should do the numbers. Suppose you DO increase milage from 25 to 27. And suppose you drive 1000 miles per month, and pay $3 for gas. Guess what you save??
$8.89 per month.......Oh BoY ! ! 2 McDonalds Happy Meals (small drinks)
What does this Purple Passion stuff cost???
Just my thoughts

You can go back. I have done it on a vehicle that did not respond well to full synthetic. I have been using full synthetic for over 30 years. The vehicle that did not work well with the synthetic was a 1967 El Camino. For some odd reason it used too much oil when run on synthetic. I went back to standard dino and oil consumption reverted to normal. Kept that El Camino for several more years after that.

Georgec the story at the Corvette show is par with the numurous LS1 I have spoken with. I am going to try it on the 1996 Deville First as i plan to go to Florida In October So it will be a good test. If I like the results I will use it in my LS1 Trans Am WS6 Show Car. My last dyno on my mainly stock Trans Am with the following add on's (Ported Mass Flow) Whisper air Lid/ K&N filter/ Sealed Ram Air Box/ Bumped Voltage on my TPS from 4.1 to 4.6 Volts/ Mecham Cat back with 7 1/2 Chrome Oval tips. The Dyno was 332 RWHP . So I will want to Re test and confirm Pre and Post Royal Purple 5W30. But I will let everyone know what I discover.
By the Way. NAPA auto parts, O'Reilys and some Autozones are carring Royal Purple. O'Reily's had it for 4.49 a quart. Cheeper by the case.
Thanks again
