I hear much about the 4.9 engine being very good, bullet proof even. I wonder you guys who have been on this forum for a while have you ever heard of anyone having a 4.9 that went through catastrophic failure and if so, how many times have you read about that and what was it that made it fail?
(My engine has started making a growling noise that I don't. Good be transmission, could be water pump, what do I know).
Someone here did have problems but I think it came down to a complete lack of maintenance which would kill any engine. That's not to say that 4.9s don't have problems, it's that they're a lot more reliable then other actual Cadillac engines from around the same time.
Two good ways to isolate engine noises. Three feet of 1/4 hose, stick one end in your ear and move the other around the engine bay, helps to locate sharp noises. Mechanic stethoscope, about $20 at NAPA or Harbor Freight, is very good for listening to bearing and fluid noises through metal.
