Had the a/c compressor replaced - a/c only working properly with high RPM

I guess this never ends with my caddy... when my a/c compressor clutch went up in smoke and flames I've replaced the compressor and removed the orifice tube.

I then took the car to a special a/c shop to get the following things done:
    - full flush of the system
    - attachemt of the a/c lines to the compressor iteself
    - installation of a new dryer and orifice tube
    - refill of the system with R134a

Payed 475$ for that (only labour, I provided the parts). The a/c now sort of works, but only gets ice cold when i crank up the rpm. shop tells me that's to be expected with such an old car. makes no sense to me, every active component of the ac is new. The shop filled the system with 0.9 kilogram of refrigerant. the FSM specifies 1.1 kilogram of R12. The shop told me that you need only 85% of the amount of the original R12 specs.

Does this sound right for you? What would cause the a/c to run like it does or is this in fact the regular behaviour?!

    Thanks!

    Find a different A/C shop.
Do not tell them anything except you are unhappy.
See what they have to say about it.

Easier said than done. There's no one else in a 100 mile radius that would even touch an american ac here

Since you own a '94 deville - do you have full a/c performance in idle?

I believe our A/C works just fine.
The Deville just had a new compressor and associated parts replaced last year.
Guess you need to get a quality set of gauges and figure it out then?
Manual 2 Chassis and body Section 1B-1 maybe http://www.alldatadiy.com/
There are some really good A/C threads on this forum.
    Me?
I would travel the hundred miles

Re: Had the a/c compressor replaced - a/c only working properly with high RPM

I did another test drive today. I guess I was fooled by the warm weather. According to a multimeter with a built in thermometer the A/C produces ~ 46-52° F during idle, while driving it gets down to 34° F. It still does not feel als cold as in my Chrysler but I guess I was proven wrong ;-) In fact, good thing i was wrong!

    Thanks for the help guys!

Good to read you have a happy ending
Now you have time to search out those A/C threads on this forum (there were some really good ones) and confirm your conclusion.

Was the condenser replaced? They are almost impossible to flush.

shop tells me that's to be expected with such an old car.
They're blowing smoke up your ass to get you off their back. If everything was replaced, it should perform like new.

    Yes.
