    ever seen this before?

I made a bad decision to haul 350# of water softner salt in the
the trunk. A few days later I noticed a puddle of fluid
on the rear drivers side wheel.
    I'm thinking I blew a shock?
I assume should go ahead and replace the rear set?

Looks like hydraulic fluid - light weight oil. 10 year old shocks can go at any time. The car should easily handle 350# in the trunk - plus people in the back seat. Hell, I've hauled cinder block and concrete block in the STS.

I just hauled 12 bags (600 lbs) of water softener salt the other day. I do it twice a year.

there are only a few things back there that can leak -

    shocks -

    brakes -

    fuel -

    -----------------

assuming it is the shocks - consider yourself lucky - sort of -
it will be the easiest and least expensive thing to fix -

    -----------

Monroe MA822 KIT is an EXCELLENT choice -
they are a direct replacement - bolt right in - without any modifications -

the BEST thing - they are NOT expensive -
$58.35 - for the PAIR - with free shipping -

YES - the listing says they are for Buick -
in fact MANY full-size FWD GM cars use the same rear shocks -

    Guys,
    thanks for the info.

Yes, these are the original shocks.
I guess hauling the salt was a coincidence.
I know carrying them into the house gave me a good work out, LOL.

Amen brother. I used to carry 2 at a time from the garage to the basement (half the number of trips). I have finally come to the realization that I just can't do that shit anymore and have been reduced to one bag at a time.

I quit carrying two down because of the stairs of death... and I was a hell of a lot younger.

It sort of looks like brake fluid but that's a lot of it. Check and see what the level is. I've never seen a shock that makes a mess like that.

    Re: ever seen this before?

I have. My wife's LeSabre had a huge puddle of oil under the RR shock last year. Garage floor wasn't sloped so it did not run like that.

If it is brake fluid, the pedal will sink to the floor.

    Ranger is correct.
I immediately checked the brake fluid before driving the car, and it was fine. It was a leaky shock. I guess I got my moneys worth. Both rear shocks have been replaced.
