creeking noise on hard acceleration

Remove this ad
New to the Group,
Just purchased a 96 DeVille w/ 88,000 miles. Good clean car. Second Cadillac, replaces an 89 Brougham.

A - Under Full Throttle Acceleration I hear a brief creeking noise coming foward of the firewall. Is it that Northstar pushing out or should I be concerned?? Seems like it's coming from the left side of engine compartment...

B - Traction Control Warning light comes on after 'bout 15 miles on a cold start in the AM. Stays on the rest of the day. NO OTHER WARNINGS appear on the console. Service says - "C0073 Spark Control Retard Monitoring Malfunction Bulletin 73-50-17 72.77 Sirial Data Line Malfunction" Been told it will take a search to diagnose, mean time it's not doing any harm, just have no traction control. Any one able to explaine code and what might be going on???

C - Rear struts leaking. BIG BUCKS to replace (WOW)!!! Service says - "Code RS0038 ELC/EXHAUST Valve Shorted to Ground" I get NO OTHER WARNINGS on the console. With new struts will this problem be solved, why isn't the condition not showing on the console? My 89 had a leaking exhaust on the compressor and a solenoid took care of it. Same here?? Compressor doesn't even come on, service said they couldn't get it to go??

_thanks

A. Not sure what to say but I'd check the motor mounts and cradle bolts for starters.

B. Check for DTC's. A T/C light should set a DTC that will tell you what is wrong. Maybe a wheel bearing sensor.

C. Repair the short or replace the exhaust solenoid. No need to replace rear struts based on that DTC.

Re: creeking noise on hard acceleration

Thanks Ranger,
A- I'm not thinking it's the mounts. I'll run it again and try to desvribe the sound better. Almost sounds like an engine knock, but knot really... be back on this one.

B - The DCT for this one is C0073, at least that's what Cadillac Service recorded on the invoice. Just had new sway bar links and brake hoses installed by an independent muffler shop. 30 miles later the warning appears. Not knowing the sensors and where they're at - shop manual coming soon - could that work have anything to do with this???

C - I'm hearing you say that the leaking rear struts don't need to be replaced until the ELC Compressor is running again, true?

What's a boy to do to get away from the clenches of an Authorized Cadillac Dealership???? My experiences have been mixed. A real good shop, but I need to go in with a good understanding as to what's going on. Did okay w/ my 89 Bro, up to a point. This beauty is a whole new beast. A few long nights with the shop manual I guess...... I stopped getting grease under the nails around the time electronic ignition came on board. These days I rely on my knowledge of the systems to block the BS a shop techie can fling out, and places like this. A GREAT FORUM - GLAD TO BE A PART

_thanks again

Yes, brake work could definately have caused the T/C message if the wheel speed sensor was disconnected or bumped loose and not reconnected. That would triger an ABS light. ABS is needed for T/C so it would inturn trigger the T/C message. The connecttors are on the back side of each wheel hub.

Re: creeking noise on hard acceleration

Looked at each wheel, all connections seem secure, new brackets were installed w/ the new brake lines that hold what I only assume are the sensor lines going into the rear of each hub. These lines do not seem disturbed. Do they pressure fit into the rear of the hubs?? Might I disconnect by pulling free and push to reconnect, assuring a good connection?? I'm just not sure how these buggers work and don't want to start pulling on them... nothing looks like it had been disconnected.

I'm not getting any ABS messages.

Any more feedback on the rear strut issues??
