    Water pump pulleys

My car was running hot when not moving. 2000 Deville. I looked under the hood and the driver's side tensoner? pulley was destroyed and the belt tangled up onto the black cover plate. The water pump pulley, the larger pulley on top, will not move if hand spun. Did I take out the water pump then too if it seems like it is seized?

    Thanks,

    Lou

    Re: Water pump pulleys

The large pulley is the drive pulley and is TIGHTLY machine pressed onto the left bank intake cam extension. If it is in any way deformed or destroyed you must get a new one, use a power steering pulley remove/install kit and replace it. There may be a protective black plastic cap screwed into the cam snout end - to keep the install/remove tool threads clean.

Pictures of all this in my albums - click my username, open the profile. Left column, 2 albums, 6 pages of Northstar stuff scattered around.

Google "cadillac forums northstar water pump tensioner pulley replacement" or "cadillac forums northstar water pump drive pulley replacement".

    Re: Water pump pulleys

No, the WP is fine. Your tensioner bearing seized, thus stopping the belt, but the drive pulley attached to the intake cam kept spinning and melted. You need to replace the drive pulley and the tensioner pulley. DO NOT use a 3 jaw gear puller to remove the remains of the drive pulley. You nee a P/S pump pulley remover/installer.

    EDIT:
Oops! Sub beat me to it.

While you're in there, spin the w/p pulley. Smooth and quiet ?? Good to go.

The tensioner assembly is about $55 or so. The tensioner pulley can be replaced for $24 - a Gates pulley at NAPA. In my albums.
