99 Deville Concours "Check Engine Coolant Level"

Morning Guys - 99 Concours. Can I leave the top off the coolant container while the car is running to see if the level drops once the thermostat opens? Or, is there another way to check? Container is black and I'm sure how to tell. Thanks. I will try to look into owner's manual.

    Thank-You!

You can leave it off until it starts to reach the boiling point (which is much lower at atmospheric pressure).

The level should not drop when the thermostat opens. The only time it should drop a little is when you rev the engine and the WP pulls the tank level down a bit. Drop the RPM back to idle and it will return (surge) back to the original level.

What are you trying to accomplish or diagnose?

Check level cold with a flashlight, should be about half way up. There is a line on the outside so you can attempt to judge level. Takes some getting used to figuring the correcrt level out at a glimpse.

If you are getting that message and the coolant level is not the problem, than its a bad level sensor in the tank and you need to replace the tank, but be sure it is not using coolant.

Thanks ! Needed to add about 1/2 gallon and that shut the message off. Now I'm a little worried why or where it went i have no leaks and just changed the oil and nothing in there

Well if you're loosing coolant, you DO have a leak. The question is, is it external or internal.

Go to a local parts store, and rent yourself a cooling system pressure test kit. Pressurize the system, cold, to 20 PSI. Check for leaks.

If you don't see one, it's time to do a block test (a chemical test that indicates if there're combustion gasses in the cooling system. A sign of HG failure). You can rent a block test kit from the parts store as well.

Forget the oil. Northstars rarely ever leak coolant into the crankcase when a HG fails. On a positive note, they can seep very slowly at places that will evaporate before they drip.
