Smile fuel Gauge question (here we go again!)

ok, i need some help folks. I own a 98 deville concours. the gas gauge is like stuck at empty, and shows low fuel on the dash. here is what I have done so far. Today, I had a brand new fuel pump module installed in it. The car runs stronger, but the gas gauge still doesnt work. the wiring at the tank is in great shape. so its not the sending unit or wiring there. just need some help or guidance wih this. any help will be appreciated.

this is a long shot - but worth trying -

    disconnect BOTH battery cables -
and touch them together for a few seconds -

    then re-install the cables -

ALWAYS disconnect the NEGATIVE cable first -
and re-install the POSITIVE cable first -

Shall we assume the gauge worked at some point?
Sounds like that new assembly is suspect.

Where did the new pump assembly come from?

On most GM cars if the gauge stays on empty, theres a wire grounded (touching metal) somewhere in the harness to the tank. If it stays on full, theres an open connection in the harness.

ok. more info for you guys. new assembly is a brand new gm unit from my local dealer. the gas gauge didnt work when I got the car. so, at the advice of some of the posts here, i replaced the unit as a starting point. it still doesnt function. when i clear the pzm codes, the gauge goes to full, sits there and then im back to empty again. so...im at a bit of a loss. this has to me the most complicated car I have ever owned.

What codes do you have with definition and history or current?
I can't remember if IPC or BCM deals with fuel level. The bcm does store avg mpg etc.

codes are meaningless without their definitions -
and no one has them all memorized -

b1552 -- loss of keep alive memory
b0533 -- deals with the sensor wiring itself
b1558 -- deals with eprom checksum error

    b0533 Fuel Sensor Open/Shorted To B+
well it sounds like that would be the problem need fsm to figure out how to trouble shoot that one
B1558 - BCM EPROM Checksum Error
could be BCM is toast maybe caused by faulty pump or wiring. They run 30-50, maybe numbers fit, but a concours may have sepcific unit. check your number.

Re: fuel Gauge question (here we go again!)

As I said.... If the gauge stays on E there's a shorted wire in the harness. Now you have an extra sender! Get it on a rack and trace the tank harness under the car. And yes these cars are complicated

Re: fuel Gauge question (here we go again!)

well, i crawled under the car today since it was nice outside. inspected the harness and checked it. no shorts to ground, or b+ as described. but...with the harness plugged into the bcm, it showed shorted to b+. so, the bcm is the issue. got one on the way and will keep you guys posted. thanks for yalls help.
