Thumbs up 2001 DHS : No crank, no click

Received a call at work today from the wife. She's out and about with the grandkids. Gets back in the car, it starts but the lights on the dash don't seem right. Turns the car off and attempts to restart. No click, no crank. Dead.

No ----power door locks, windows, radio. Some other things seem to work.
Told her to call Roadside through our insurance.
Driver shows up to give a jump but says the battery is no good, and probably has a bad starter too.
She calls back about his diagnosis and I told her to call Roadside back and have it towed to the house.

I get home and start in on it. No crank, not even a subtle click. Try moving the selector to neutral, no difference.
Look on here for ideas --- bad connections on cables, loose grounds, other possibles.
    Checked battery voltage 12.3 volts
Connections are tight on the cables

Check for codes on the dash display. Absolutely none.
Had a few on there before. Minor things.

I guess I'll try my external OBD-II scanner.
Plug it in without the key on just for grins and giggles. "Failure to connect".
Turn the key to ON position.

    Holy Crap!!!
The seat moved, steering wheel changed position, all of the once dead dashboard stuff came to life just by turning the key to ON and touching nothing else. Just like it normally would.

Turn the key and the car fires right up.

Will continue to investigate any possibility of codes cropping up before I turn her loose with the car.

Not sure if having the scanner plugged in had anything to do with it or not, but I'll take a running car over the alternative any day.

Sounds like it might be a faulty ignition switch.

    Entirely possible.
    2001 with a little over 80,000 miles.
Was my Uncle's pride and joy.
Only difference is that he could afford to take it in for every little thing.

Me----- I like a good challenge to fix myself.

Re: 2001 DeVille DHS : No crank, no click

One other thing that was wierd during the no crank issue.
When I was trying to use both sets of keys to start the car, the dash would display "Driver #1" when the #2 set was in the ignition,
and would display "Driver #2" when the primary set was being tried.

Returned to normal recognition when the car "decided" to start working.

Will look into new ignition switches this weekend.

I think the car reads driver 1 & 2 off of the key fob if I am not mistaken.

Yeah, the fobs are 1 and 2, there is no difference between the keys.

Re: 2001 DHS : No crank, no click

Sorry, should have been a little clearer in my verbage.

When key with fob #1 was in ignition, display would read "Driver No 2"
When key with fob #2 was in ignition, display read "Driver No 1"

Returned to proper recognition of fobs (#1 and Driver 1, #2 and Driver 2)when the starting circuit came back to life.

Had about the same problem with my 2000 and it turned out to be loose battery leads at the starter. When access to the starter was gained you could see the connections were loose and were burnt on the starter connections.

I had weird electrical conditions with my 99 Deville when the battery was on the way out. I started the engine and the trunk lid opened. I turned it off, got out and closed the trunk. Got back in, started it again and the gas filler door opened. The battery had enough voltage to start the engine but it was creating other odd conditions. Replacing the battery took care of the problem.

    ^This.^
Will start when it feels like it.

But won't affect other power items.

These are the typical "replace the battery please!" tell-tale signs for our Cadillacs.
