Won't Shift Out Of First Gear

earlier this morning it worked i dropped the wife at work and went to go home and noticed my car wouldnt shift out of first gear, pulled the code and got a neutral safety switch, I just replaced the nuetral safety switch and still cant shift out of 1st gear, I can reverse and it hits all the gears when i shift but when i hit the gas nothing happens except when in drive when i can actually move, however i cannot get it past 27 mph. I dont know what to do, could a bad vacuum line be the cause i hear what sounds like hissing from a punctured tire when the car runs. Need serious help!!!!

    Re: PLEASE....need help!

You might locate and repair that vacuum line first.

    P.S.
I'm going to edit your title. "PLEASE....need help!" is not very descriptive.

If this is about the '94 in your profile, the transmission isn't vacuum controlled.

So the transmission will shift through all fears if you shift manually?

4.9 has 4t60e trans. with 215k miles? a bad neutral selector switch would probably cause no start/crank, vs no shift.

Re: Won't Shift Out Of First Gear

I can feel all the gears catch when i shift manually but still cant get past approx. 30 mph I can reverse just fine and can accelerate but when i hit 25 it starts winding down and loses power if i get rpms above 2200 it loses it grip so to speak and I can feel it slide back to nuetral but if i shift back to drive it wont catch so i have to turn off the car put it in park and start it and reshift all over.

I think you might be correct as much as my wallet will not like it one bit.

This doesn't sound like a transmission problem. If you're hitting 25 mph in first gear, your engine would be screaming by then.
Are you sure it is not shifting?

Sounds more like a power loss issue.

Okay, now that I reread your post, I'm not so sure.
What do you mean, when you shift manually? How do you do that?

Have you checked your transmission fluid level?

Re: Won't Shift Out Of First Gear

Like MoistCabbage pointed out the 4T60E is electronically controlled. There is a vacuum line that runs to it, but it's for the modulator. If that line was leaking you'd most likely have harsh shifts but it'll still be shifting.

When you say you can feel the gears engaging when moving the shifter to different positions you're feeling the 1st gear engagement in all of them. There is a transmission override that you can use for diagnosis. I don't know if it'll be the same override on your '94 deVille but on mine it's E.6.1. While in this override the transmission can manually be up and down-shifted. To access the override enter diagnostics, when 7.0 is displayed press Hi once (E.9.5 should appear IIRC), press Econ + Warmer, and then use Hi or Lo to navigate to E.6.1. When you get to the override you can put your car in drive and use Warmer to upshift and Cooler to downshift. The transmission won't downshift to first gear if above 30mph or 2nd if above 60mph. I believe the engaged gear was displayed on the FDC.

Edit: I missed a step in the process of navigating to the transmission override. Please, read the steps again!

this is a long shot but one time I had a similar issues with my transmission. turuned out the electrical connector in front of my Trans was shorting out the one by the vacuum module. I did a quick test, I completely unplugged it took for a spin and she felt normal again. so I knew that was it repaired short and she doing fine now.
