    Heater Control Lamps Dead (pic)

    Hi all,

    After finally installing a new suspension in my 2004 Deville, now I have to deal with the irritation of the passenger control - Heater lamps suddenly dying. A few months ago, I noticed this area was dead, I smacked the dash and it turned back on. No such luck this time--the lamp is dead. Any idea how to get to the lamps behind the heater controls? Is this even possible?? [Please see attached image]

    I love this car, but I really wish they used LEDs.

    Incidentally, the lamps behind the "INFO" and "UP/DOWN" switches are also dead...so while I am at it, any ideas on how I could replace those as well??

    Thank you, as always!

    I believe the bulbs in the heater control are soldered in -
    if you have the required micro-surgery soldering skills -
    the tiny bulbs can be purchased at RadioShack -

    if that is beyond your capabilities -
    you can get a good used unit on ebay - around $50 -
    here is the part number - GM 09387856 -

    these bulbs are replaceable - although Cadillac says they are not -
    there 3 bulbs in each switch -

    to get to the switches -
    you must remove:
    both "A" pillar trim pieces -
    4 - center AC vents -
    4 - hidden screws behind the AC vents -
    remove the dash pad -

    I can't remember if the cluster must be removed or not -
    but it is only 4 screws - and 2 plugs -

    here are the bulbs -

    I replaced all 6 steering wheel bulbs on my daughters '04 SLS and one on the console last summer. I can vouch for the fact that it is micro surgery. Both bulbs where different and I got them at Radio Shack. I would post the bulb number, but not sure which one you might need if it is even the same.

    Here is a picture of what you may be looking at. This was one of the steering wheel bulbs.

    The heater control lamps are replaceable. They are a standard neo wedge bulb but I don't remember is they are T3 or T5.

    Re: Heater Control Lamps Dead (pic)

    Okay, it seems pretty involved to get at the clusters for the INFO/UP+DOWN.

    How do I remove the fascia/front of the heating unit ??

    Thankfully, I do possess very good soldering skills. I imagine the tricky thing will be to remove the heating unit. Any tips? Instructions?

    Thanks,

    Looks like the gray trim piece just pry's off. The FSM says that after that is removed the HVAC control panel has a locking tab in each of the 4 corners that needs to be depressed to remove it.

    Basscat / All,

    Do we know if the following part will work for my 2004 Deville?

    http://www.hondapartscheap.com/oem-p.../79674-s3n-941

    I just find it interesting that we are using Honda parts for the Caddy, but it is electronics...

    Thanks again,

    Those are the ones listed in post #2.

    Honda doesn't actually manufacture the bulbs. I think they're Stanleys.

    Moist,

    Great to hear from you! I am going to purchase 5 or 6 lamps from the link I posted.

    Basscat advised that these lamps also work in the Info/Up+Down switches (however, those are considerably more involved to access).

    It is actually impressive how easy it is to remove the Heating Control Unit and how well it is built.

    Those look like the same lamps I posted in post #3 that I replaced in the '04 SLS steering wheel. If you can buy the lamp in the holder as pictured it would be a LOT easier than soldering new ones like I did. Wish I had known about that.

    the steering wheel switch lights are strictly soldered-in - bare bulbs -
    same as the lights in the seat heat switches - and Traction Control switch -

    the lights in the cluster switches - heater control - trunk/gas door release -
    use that same "NEO-WEDGE" base - I think it is a T-3 base -

    I did find some tiny bulbs - with long/thin wires -
    I was able to simply swap out the old bulb -

    I don't know Bass. The bulbs in the picture in post #7 look an awful lot like what I had in the steering wheel buttons. They where soldered into a little plastic base that looks similar to what I see in the picture.

    Re: Heater Control Lamps Dead (pic)

    See, the leads for the lamp are bent 45-degrees on the inside of the base (socket) and from my experience, it is very difficult to desolder them. So what Ranger said. It is definitely way better to replace the socket+lamp and from what I have seen, they are around $3.25 ea. Based on the part # shown in Basscat's bag (post #2), the base is a T4, but I am going to take it out and measure it.
    T3 = 8mm
    T4 = 10mm
    T5 = 12mm

    I see there are some options for swapping these lamps for LEDs (around $2.00 ea), however I am a bit concerned about polarity. I dunno, I may go for it, but it may wind up looking too unbalanced (bright).

    http://ledpackages.com/index.php/by-...ard-light.html

    I am going to take it apart again this afternoon and measure the base to be 100%.
