    Water Pump Lifespan

Greetings, As you know the head gasket repair and engine reseal on my '02 DHS is well underway at the shop. Is it wise to replacing the water pump at 88K miles as a preventative step? How long do these pumps usually last?

You have the new style cover so I wouldn't replace it myself. And if it does need changed down the road it's easy to do anyways. If you had 150k I might say yes. The water pump idler pulley on the other hand I would change, when they go the take the cam pulley out. For $25-30 it's a five minute job esp since you have engine out. Add a belt for $10.

There is no "usual". Mine is at 106K and everything except the tensioner pulley is original and the only reason I changed it was because I had to change my daughters at 140K and figured I may as well order 2 and do them both. Hers needed it, mine did not.

The shaft seal should be the concern regarding this discussion, and in the scope of the seal, age is a concern, not mileage. Frankly, I think the 12 year old seal justifies a "while-you-are-there" replacement. At this point, it (and anything else gasketed/sealed) is likely to fail sooner than later - and if you are pumping in the resources to do a HG job, I would assume you plan to keep it for some time...

So it looks like my baby is coming back home tomorrow. I spoke to the shop owner today. Caddy is back together but he discovered while road testing today that I have a bad ignition control module on what would be the right bank coil pack. New coil pack with module to be installed before I get there tomorrow (the only way he can get it from his distributors). I'll bring the bad one home, replace the module and call it a spare. Other than that repair was a non event. No more HG issues and no more stinky oil leak.

Northstar water pumps aren't really complicated, if they spin without leaks, they work. I did not replace mine when I repaired HG on my 00 because it looked new. It's still working after three years, and it's probably 14 years old. I did replace one in my 99 because one of those cheap water pump socket ate it...
