I've just noticed, that on the specs page for the 03' Deville it says 87 gas (http://www.cadillacforums.com/cadillac-deville/deville_specs.html). When did they lower the requirement for the gas from premium to this? And is it ok to use on a long term basis the 87 instead of the premium on a 96' Deville? Just wanna know if I can be a cheap s.
They redesigned the northstar in '00, so you could use regular...... However, even on these, Id still use midgrade.....
And no, you CAN NOT use 87 cheapo gas on your 96...... DONT DO IT..... I can give you more details, and you can search around for stuff on the board, but take my word.... DONT...... The MFG would have recommended regular if they COULD......
I wasn't going to pump lower gas (just a stupid joke), since I've been pumping premium even before the Caddy. But that's good to know that they have lowered the requirement. Even in my old Lincoln I don't put regular, keeps down the knocking plus its a big engine anyways requiring a lot of torque, burns cleaner and all.
If I could I would probably be pumping 100 octane if I could, just for the performance aspect of it.
Sorry meant to say Shell V-Power 100 octane, which is unleaded. Unfortunately they don't sell it in the states, in Europe, mainly Germany. In UK the closest is the Optimax which is 98 octane.
Well, not in my 30 mile radius, and thats a big area. Closest place I can get 100 is at the race track, not sure if it's unleaded, and it isn't cheap.
In Europe its right with the regular gas, for a resonable price, at their gas prices that is.
Unless somebody can point me to one that's less than two miles from my house, well prove me wrong. (now im being sarcastic) I'm not trying to be an ass, but this stuff is not easily purchased in the US. Or something that comes close to it in performance, without using a gallon of ocatne booster.
My 4.9 requires premium, but on another site i was asking questions and I was told that when I run the tank almost empyt, to put a few gallons of mid-grade in, if it dosn't ping, it is ok and may actually give better performance since there is less soultions and added things then in 93..... I *may* try it, I dunno, but I have always used premium (93)
I can run anything (87-94 octane)in all of my Caddys, and they are all high mileage vehicles, although I run 89 in them all regularly. All Caddy's (new ones) are designed to run on todays pump gas, but you gotta watch what brand it is, I always stick to name brand and busy gas stations, the busier the better the gas, its not sitting around in the tanks forever and the tanks are usually better maintained than old non name brand gas stations, and if you own a newer Caddy, it should never ping unless you are pumping water with your gas, thats what an anti knock sensor is for, it advances or retards up to 10 degrees the ignition timing through the computer if it senses knocking.
Your SDV and CDV dont have knock sensors...... So it CANT retard timing......
Its at max 2-4 extra over regular...... WHY NOT PUT IN THE GOOD STUFF....... Its still a high end luxury car at heart, so treat it that way...... The Q has never seen anything less than 92, and it wont EVER!!!
I think you need to review your sources, both my Cadillacs have knock sensors, and they will retard or advance up to 10 degrees, I don't make this stuff up. I have owned 9 caddys and maintained them all myself, so therefore I do agree with what you said about high end luxury cars and putting the best into them, but I would never run 100 octane in it, cause I don't want hollow pistons! j/k They are Caddys not big block musclecars! :2thumbs:
Your 93 SDV has the 4.9l (correct), and the 90 CDV will have the 4.5 (correct).... Both of these are pushrod V8s (200, and 180HP respectively) and have very few electronic sensors!
Ok, I stand corrected, I was thinking of Buick, sorry, should think before I type (must be the beers) but my caddys have an electronic spark timing system (EST), it uses the Engine Control Module (ECM) to determine the proper spark advance for the engine operating condition, such as crappy fuel, and sends EST pulse to the distributor, the way the ECM can figure out how your engine is running is by the reference pulse of the distributor, which indicates both engine RPM and crankshaft position (looking for a miss) Thats how a Caddy is supposed to keep from pinging while running cheapo gas. Hope I have redeemed myself Elwesso, you were right no knock sensor here!!
Again, you have to agree that putting in anything less than premium is kinda stupid... You get lesser performance, and decreased gas mileage, and the THOUGHT of spark knock gives me fits and badspells....
And also, I believe that the computer detects misses by the o2 sensors.... I could be wrong though..
If I get a chance tomorrow afternoon, Ill dig up some threads if I can find any..... Give yourself a bump on your thread (post a message so that it returns to the new posts list) and Ill do it first thing tomorrow!
EDIT: All you gotta do is use the search button at the top..... Type in the keyword and search all open forums...... I cant remember off hand what your heater dilemma is, but see what you can come up with.....
Heck yea, I agree about the octane thing, if you can afford to buy and maintain a caddy you can afford the fuel expense, after all a Caddy was never built to be a practical car per say, it just kinda works out that way.
The understanding of Octane levels helps the decision making process.
Most people assume that higher octane burns hotter, therefore better performance.
If lower octane burns lower, then no harm can be done by running lower octane.
This is the farthest thing from the truth.
The higher OCTANE level, the slower the fuel burns - therefore the more even the burn is through the compression stroke. Think of it as a longer burn.
Run lower octane, and the fuel burns very rapidly, think explosive detonation. When this happens as the piston is coming up, huge forces are at odds within the combustion chamber.
Early detonation can cause knock, and even destroy the pistons.
A few extra $$ every fillup is cheap insurance to keep things together.
