Hello, Im posting to gain brief insite on my cooling system issue. Im not a tech so I just would like some info until payday gets me to my local shop. While tending to an isolated issue, the svc tech showed me coolant dripping from the water pump which is the intentional indicator it needs to be replaced. As I vacated from the shop I went home & filled up the resovoir (I cannot find the "full" mark) figuring its dripping anyway, so I should be ok till next payday. I (hastely) drove @ 30 miles on hwy & a little on street. Got home, shut off the car & checked under the car for the status of my unrelated oil leaks. After several seconds @ 1 - 2 cups of coolant poured from the front of the car. Can someone please clarify to me that this could be the coolant expanded & drained from the overfill hose, or if this is what happens when the pump breaks. I believe its odd that the fluid suddenly came out AFTER I turned off the motor. I checked the coolant levels a couple hours later & they are pretty full. Also she starts right up. Sorry to chew ur ear off but just wanted to be thorough. Any info will help me get some sleep. Thx!

    Re: Cooling system fiasco

Proper coolant level in the surge tank is 1/2 full, cold. If you overfilled it, it's entirely possible for the engine to burp out excess coolant - and a 1 - 2 cup burp would be about right.

A leaking water pump shaft seal will usually weep coolant all the time.

    Re: Cooling system fiasco

When you shut the engine down, obviously the WP stops spinning and thus the cooling system ceases to operate, BUT the engine is still hot. IF you filled the tank to the top, the expanding coolant has no where to go except out the overflow.

This does sound right. Thank you, I just wanted to see if this may sound correct to the experts/members here.
