    Wheel cover problem

    Hi

My '87 Coupe has wire-spoked wheel covers. I have one or two that 'travel' along the wheel to the point where they stop and put continuing pressure on the tire valve. I've tried all I can think of to make the cover stay where I put them, but to no avail.
I've always had the worry of the cover cutting the valve stem. Today before leaving for a Dr appointment I checked the air pressures in the tires. As I attempted to mount the gauge I began hearing air escape. Sure enough the pressure from the cover messed up that valve stem. The four stems were replaced 3yrs ago when I bought new tires.
The security nut is plenty tight and the spring 'arms' that help to hold the cover to the rim are tight. I don't know if anyone has also experienced this particular problem, but if so, any solutions?
    Thanks

    Dave

try swapping the hubcaps around to different wheels -

it is possible there is a groove worn/cut into the wheel -
where the teeth of the hubcaps have been digging in -

it's also possible the "teeth" of the hubcap are worn down -
so they simply can't bite into the wheel any longer -

    Thanks for the reply.
I took the tire to the local NTB, where I bought the tires and the tires on my truck. Man there installed a metal stem valve at no charge. I dremeled-out some more space at the valve-stem area on the cover and added a washer on each side of the ¼" security bolt. I'll keep an eye on it to see if there is any travel now.
The grip-teeth on the cover rim look to be in good condition and it's easy to see where they fit on the rim.
    I appreciate the response, thanks.

Yes, still have it. It runs great, it's safe and everything works.....paid for too! It's mostly for highway trips and my truck has the daily-driver duty.

    Re: Wheel cover problem

Make sure that your tires are properly inflated. If they are low or the tires are not the right size the tire side wall can contact the wire hub cap and cause the problem you describe. The tire contacts the cover with a slightly different diameter then the rim. This causes a slight difference in rotational speed rotating the cover. Older British sports cars with knock off wire wheels use the same principal to assure that their knock off hubs tighten up as they are used. If you have ever reversed the hubs on one of these cars you will find that the wire wheels will loosen up and ultimately come off of the car. I have seen this happen several times.
