1994 DeVille Will Not Steer and Grinding and Vibration

My dad's 1994 with 4.9 110k miles. Stated that he cannot move the wheel at all and that it is grinding and vibrating. Engine starts and runs. Says had neighbor check and has fluid........I am a state away and have not seen it yet. Any ideas off hand? Pump? Rack? Gear? Let me know.

Maybe the "grinding" he's hearing is the pump aerating the fluid? Did he check if the fluid had bubbles in it?

I bet the pump is seizing up. Had it happen once on my 4 cyl integra. It was enough to kill the engine. On these 8 cyl beasts i'm sure it will lower the idle and give you the vibration he's talking about.

Thanks guys. He is not very car smart so I do not know if it is circulating. I am off next week and he has heat in his garage. For bout $100 think I will try the pump route. He says he is done with the car and wants to give it to me. If it works great he can just keep it. And if not...............I am not pulling racks etc. He can have it towed for trade in.

Is the grinding at idle (P/S pump) or while trying to turn the wheel (steering column)?

Thanks for the replies so far guys. Ranger, he can't turn the wheel so its making noise at idle. He had a neighbor look at it running and he said the vibration was coming from the pump shaft. I ordered a pump anyways and should be here tomorrow or Saturday. It is a Delco reman and that looks like it may have been an oops based on reman failure rates. But I can only find oem new and it is almost $300. Even though this car is in real nice shape, garage kept, and he bought it new, it is probably not worth much. Si I cannot see dumpin tons of $$ into it.

$70 for new pump and o-ring set. Did not come with a reservoir and I don't know how hard this is to separate. Will advise when done. At least he has a heated garage........high in the 20's around here next few days.

Or try used? Car is not new, as you point out. So why not try a used pump?

Took me a while to spot this in the manual, but yes disconnect the "return line from adapter using special tool J 36391" (quick disconnect tool).
