Oil Gasket Costs $1500 To Fix!!!

Remove this ad
I have had a oil leak for awhile now and finally decided to go to the mechanic to check it out. He told me that my oil pan gasket is bad. He woould need to drop the engine or trans to replace it because of some bolts that cant be reached. Is this true? Has anyone ever had this happen?

?????? I got a 98 Dev as well...I was under it just yesterday and I'm pretty sure I saw the pan was just bolted straight on from underneath.....unless I am missing something.

Very curoius to hear from other more knowledgeable folks.

But my guess is he's trying to rip you off or he's talkin about a different leak like the half case.....

Well according to General Motors the Labor Time for an Oil Pan Gasket replacement is 6.8 hours. I replaced the oil pan and oil filter adapter gasket on My Fleetwood and I only payed about $20 for the gaskets. It looks like the mechanin may be trying to win on you.

Re: Oil Gasket Costs $1500 To Fix!!!

I am not positive but I beleive the engine has to be dropped to get the pan off. Do a search for oil pan and such. I seem to recall others say that they have all but eliminated oil pan leaks (assuming it is the pan and not the half case or something else) by removing one bolt at a time (those you can get at) and cleaning the bolt hole with brake cleaner, then applying a thread sealer and retorquing it.
