Water in valley under intake manifold- 2002 DTS

Greetings! Let me start by saying I'm new to this forum, and basically new to Cadillacs. I bought a 2002 DTS last week, and have been hooked on the information and helpfulness of you folks here!

Here's the story on the car. Previous owner said it needs a new starter, and was quoted over $2K to replace! I always liked the looks of the DTS, and rented one years ago, really liked it, and was able to buy this thing extremely reasonable- not running. I followed several posts on this forum, and removed the intake this evening- not a huge job at all.

    I found two things:

First, the starter appears to be original, and is shot! Brushes are gone, commutator is real rough and burnt. No problem, as I planned to buy a new one.

Second is more troubling to me. In the valley, more on the passenger side of the car, there was lots of murky looking water! Probably a pint or so. I immediately thought it was coolant, but no it's just water with some oil film. There were also some leaves mixed in. Is this something I should be concerned with? I cleaned it out, but is there anything I should be looking for? I think the previous owner probably left the hood up for some time apparently.

Please let me know your thoughts and recommendations. I appreciate it very much! I'm anxious to get this ole girl running again.
    Thanks!
    Russ

Rodents were probably nesting in there. Water could be from someone cleaning with a hose or pressure washer. If it wasn't coolant, don't worry about it.

WHERE ON EARTH did he go that quoted OVER 2K for a starter?!?!?!

When you have time, lots of reading to be done in the "sticky" threads, here and in the Northstar forums, and the entire Cadillac Technical Archives (in the black tab at the top of the page).

$2000 to replace the starter? I'll do it for half that and have to back up to you to take your money because I won't be able to look you in the face.

I'll do it for 1/4, and buy you a sandwich.

I'm not sure where the quote was from, it scared him away from fixing the car, and in fact he advertised it as "parts". While it's not a perfect car, it has a few dings, it's actually pretty sharp. Interior is dirty but no tears or rips. Nearly new tires, glass is all good. I was able to buy it for well under $1,000. I hope to have it running tomorrow, and we'll see if it drives as good as he said it does.
    Thanks!
