    2003 deville elc pump

i have a few questions about the elc pump on a 03 deville
1 is the pump suppose to come on every time that the car is started?
2 is there some sort of electronic check valve in the pump that hold,s the air until the car is shut off?

every time i start my car the pump comes on for 5 to 10 seconds, if i shut the car off and restart it right away it comes on again, i would think if it was shut off and restarted it shouldnt come on right away

and if i drive it down the road 5 minutes after staring it it will come on again, some times i can drive for many miles and it wont come on, other times it will come on ever few minutes, i sprayed every thing that i can see (lines and shocks) with soapy water and i see no leaks but i cant spray around the pump cuz its enclosed, would always having a full tank of gas make it come on more often? when my fuel get to one bar below full i always top it off (anal)
    ????

is the pump suppose to come on every time that the car is started?
    YES -

is there some sort of electronic check valve in the pump
that hold,s the air until the car is shut off?

YES - actually an EXHAUST VALVE - built into the compressor head -

every time i start my car the pump comes on for 5 to 10 seconds
    CORRECT - that is the "self-test" -

if i drive it down the road 5 minutes after staring it it will come on again
you have a leak in the system -
either the compressor - the air supply lines -
or most common - in the shocks -

would always having a full tank of gas make it come on more often?
NO - the compressor should come on when the load changes -
I believe you have a leak somewhere -

    -------------------

check for codes - the exhaust valve IS monitored -

    Exact truth ^^^

(IF the system is tight the self-test is only ~2 seconds.) .......... otherwiase the system has to work to level the car after sitting.

    Re: 2003 deville elc pump

on the EXHAUST VALVE - built into the compressor head, does it let out all the air in the system when the car is shut off??? ifso then i would imagine that the compressor pump would have to run for more than 2 seconds like submariner said at startup to refill the system???
im just trying to understand the way the system works

does it let out all the air in the system when the car is shut off
    NO -
    to over simplify -
there is a level switch under the car -
this switch has a predetermined setting where "level" is -

when there is a load in the back seat and/or trunk - and the rear sits too low -
the level switch turns on the compressor -
to inflate the air bladders built into the shocks -
thus raising the body - back to the predetermined "level" position -

when the load is eliminated - the rear will sit too high -
so - the level switch activates the exhaust valve built into the compressor -
and releases the air from the bladders -
until the car drops down to the predetermined "level" position -

the minimum air pressure in the bladders is 14PSI -

If you want to verify that, simply reach in over the tire, remove the retainer clip and pull the plug. You should hear air release.
